Dodgeball Grows Up, Finds Niche With Adults

School Playground Game Gains Popularity With Older Crowd

PORTLAND, Ore. -- There's a dodgeball renaissance under way in the United States.

A group of young adults in Oregon has begun competing in the Portland adult dodgeball league. Kent State University now recognizes it as a club sport.

The sport of choice for the elementary school playground set is even featured in a movie this summer. "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" stars Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn.

To compete in the Portland league, players must be at least 21. That way, says founder Colleen Finn, nobody will feel left out if the teams go out for beers after the game.

We used to play regular dodgeball, cornerball, and circle dodgeball all the time. One of my best experiences as a counselor involved dodgeball...
