Poll question: Radio listeners, How fast do you switch channels after the spots start?
Edited on Wed May-19-04 11:03 AM by Tom_Foolery
I've been in the radio biz for 20 years, and I've always wondered how fast people change channels after the spot breaks start. Let's say there are five :60 second spots in a break: How many spots do you let air before you switch channels?

Edit: Added IMMEDIATELY to the
choices.

1. You left out "Immediately"
I hate commercials. They are annoying.

2. you missing the most obvious choice
"I switch as soon as the commercials start." You're assuming that listeners sit through one or more commercials before changing stations.

3. Well, since stations make their money from spots...
that should scare the hell out of management. I've tried to tell them that for years, but they never listen. Broadcast radio is doomed unless some changes are made. All the conglomerates will never do it, though. They're notorious for sticking their heads in the sand.

4. Commercials are crap

I never listen to them; they are a complete waste of my time. I'm a compulsive button pusher. If a station has too many commercials I won't listen to it -- no matter if I like the music/the dj/whatever. What's the point of wasting my time with empty things?

That's a chief reason for me to stick with NPR. I don't have to listen to a program of commercials just to get to the 5-10 minutes of content I really care about listening to.

Station owners are using the wrong paradigm to sell the wrong things to the wrong people. Their objective should be to air meaniful content to the community, not "air" to advertisers. Screw 'em.

Bottom line: No advertising of any stripe works on me. If I'm interested in something I'll learn all about it (not usually from the purveyor or manufacturer), find out what I want and don't want, then go by it.

In short, I'm a marketing genius's worst nightmare of a consumer.

/marketing rant.

edit: Related subject - TO HELL WITH CROSS SELLING!!!! :argh: :grr: I've just about decided to stop buying things at Best Buy because when I get to cash register, the cashier wants to cross sell me 10 different magazines, a car stereo, a DVD player, a new TV, all this BEFORE THEY WILL RING UP MY STUFF!!! :nuke: :nuke:

5. I usually don't have to switch...I'm an XM listener!
Of course, when I'm listening to "America Left", I switch during the commercials, but they often have entertaining segments in the commercial breaks rather than real commercials.

6. Well...we used to only have one sports radio station in town.
So, I kept the radio tuned there all the time. Actually, when I was new to town, listening to the ads helped me find services or businesses I might have missed. Now that we have two sports radio stations, I am more apt to switch, unless one of my favorite shows is on. I'll generally listen to the crappy ads, but I don't pay as much attention anymore.

7. Sometimes I listen to them all.
There's only one radio station I really like here, and one other I can tolerate for a few songs before they play something that gets on my nerves. So when the commercials come on I either endure it, switch to a CD, or turn it off entirely, depending on my mood.

Honestly, I don't listen to a lot of radio, and I've built a vast library of CDs to make up for this. Commercial spots are the #1 reason I don't listen.

8. I listen to the mini-ads on public radio
but that's starting to piss me off too. I was fine with a mention. Then they started listing the website, which was iffy. but now they read 10 second plugs for them.
