Charles Barkley in talks to co-host Monday Night Football
Barkley, ABC talking about 'MNF' job

ABC wants to add some basketball to its "Monday Night Football."

Executives at the Walt Disney Co. network have "informally" inquired whether former NBA All-Star Charles Barkley would be interested in joining the network's flagship sports program, ABC and his agent said.

"We've been approached about doing something," agent Marc Perman said in a telephone interview, declining to discuss specifics. Barkley is an analyst on TNT's "Inside the NBA."

1. Is this from the Onion?
Because it's not funny.

Shouldn't he have to learn how to speak English first?

2. Barkley is a POS in my book.
He shoulda been thrown out of the sport after he punched that Angolan player during the 92 Olympics. He is the epitomy of what is wrong with professional sports. Overpaid assholes with no sense of sportsmanship or honor.

5. I can't help it.
I can't respect someone who would disgrace himself, his sport and his country like that. Kids look up to and emulate professional athletes. If his conduct is applauded, it will be emulated.

I feel the same about John McEnroe and tennis.

28. So do I
I barely watch now that he's not playing anymore, but I still tune in when I remember to catch him during the halftime show. I miss Charles and K.J and Danny Ainge, the good old days with the Phoenix Suns when they could actually win a game.

7. Not only did he sucker punch that Angolan player; he lied about it!
I thought he was OK until that incident.
The man ain't got no class.

Charles Barkley is an obnoxious blowhard who makes me cringe every time he opens his mouth.

4. I love Barkley and want him to stay right where he is!
He and the rest of the crew are fantastically funny on Inside the NBA. It's my favorite show after The Simpsons and The Daily Show.

He wouldn't be as good on MNF because he doens't know those guys as well. What he's doing now works because he's a basketball player not a football player. IMO this is ABC being desperate again. They tried Dennis Miller, they tried Rush Pigbottom, both failed spectacularly and they're clueless.

Big thumbs down.

I am not up on the politics of basketball players
but his views seem pretty far right to me.

25. He supported John Edwards
I'm not saying he's a Democrat, or even a liberal. He strikes me as an independent that could support either party. I doubt he's supporting Bush now.

You obviously missed his appearance on "Real Time" with Bill Maher.

Chuck would be great on MNF.

16. He's an Independent like O'Lie-ly is an Independent.
Just because you CLAIM to be an Independent, doesn't make it true. When you support Repugnant positions and causes, you're a Repug. You don't get to call yourself an Independent, and make it all go away.

He's a racist who supports the failed economic policies of his fellow racists in the Repugnant party. He invokes God when it's convenient, but doesn't live his life in accordance with the principles of any monotheistic religion I've ever heard of.

He can register as a Green if he wants... his actions make him Repugnant.

17. Racist!!?
He has a white wife. I heard his political views, he has bashed Bush lots of times and the fact how the administration has gotten ridiculous especially during the whole duck tape thing. He was never afraid to say anything political on his basketball show and admired him for that. He is a straight shooter and he has an opinion about everything, the thing is you will not always like it.

he's "eclectic" in his politics. Big deal. Many Americans are.

It was on Talk Back Live on CNN in 2000 or so.

10. Now, THIS is a good idea. I love Barkley.
He's clearly an independent, politically, and he treats both sides with humor and a healthy dose of skepticism. He's not just a jock... he's a smart jock.

I dig him. :D

13. Do Not Mess with MNF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everytime they try this, it backfires. Why in the hell would they want to add this guy to their line-up? It's unecessary and totally out of whack. They did the right thing in bringing on Michelle Tofoya to replace the bimbo - why would they want to add Barkley?
I say, leave MNF alone. It's fine the way it is!

JMHO, as always.

15. Barkley is much more funny and intelligent then Dennis Miller
Just because someone doesn't play football doesn't mean they have no knowledge in the area. What team did Al Michaels play for? He made it based on his great commentary and play-by-play. That's why he is also doing NBA games on NBC, Barkley is very good at commentary which is why I love the NBA on TNT. He will be a very good addition based on that.

19. Charles is looking to leave NBA broadcasts...
...because he is going to have an ownership stake in the Phoenix Suns (I think). Because of that, he feels he can't be objective, and won't do NBA broadcasts any more.

I think Charles is good on TV, but I'm not sure about his level of football knowledge.

26. I haven't read the article yet
Don't have time to register at the moment.

I hope they wouldn't put him in the booth alongside Madden or Michaels. They are two of the best announcers out there. No need to tamper with that format.

If anything, they might create a halftime or pregame booth and team him with a Chris Berman. That could be interesting.

29. As long as they keep him away from the players...
he'll be ok.

Semi OT, but...

Barkley is either fearless, or stupid...

I was at a T-wolves game a few years back (when I was still living in MN), and wouldn't you know it, they were (if I remember right) playing the suns. Anyhow, Barkly was on the opposing team. Well, that night was a memorable one, because there was also one John Randle in the stands. (that was at the time, John Randle, MN Viking, and all around pretty rough guy)

So randle is trash talking at the players on the court, and barkley stops and says "what you want to do about it" or something along those lines, and randle motions for barkley to bring it.

Nothing happened, the game went on without incident. But I have had these disturbing images in my mind of what Randle would have done to barkley ever since.

At the time, John Randle would have wiped the FLOOR with him.

30. I Like Charles As Much As The Next Guy
But He Hardly Knows Basketball (I'll Admit, He Would Beat The Piss Out Of Me In Game) But As Far As His Knowledge Of The Players/Teams I Find His Analysis Short. Now, Put Him On A Football Show? Shit, He'll Be Funnier Than Miller, I'll Give You That - But Let's Get Madden On MNF.
