Let's alternate saying good and bad things about Randi Rhodes.
I feel ambivalent about her. I'll start saying one good and one bad thing about her:

Good thing: She's an air force veteran. She sounds totally at home talking military. I'd love to see her and Rush, man, Limbaugh talk military together.

Bad thing: Yesterday she called herself a radio professional while implying that Air America is unprofessional. It seems to me a true professional would roll with the punches. Randi is more of a prima donna than a consummate professional. I HATE prima donnas!

1. Good thing: "Godfather" references and a quick recall of facts

Bad thing: Often too strident, awful music parodies.

Oh yeah. And that weird yet offensive French-bashing rant the other day.

2. Good thing: She's got a great voice and an amazing way with words.
Bad thing: She loves the sound of her own voice and her amazing way with words.

3. Bad Thing...I don't like how she takes Jabs @ the other hosts.
Edited on Thu May-20-04 10:56 AM by xultar
It makes me not want to listen to her. It reminds me of the whole shooting in the circle thing.

Good Thing: She's our Raving Liberal/Proggressive, and we need one.

Edited first to add good thing ( I guess I was to stoopid to get the format)

Edited second for format

4. Which hosts does she take jabs at?
The Morning Sedition and Unfiltered people? I don't know about Morning Sedition, but I like Unfiltered a lot. They had a special segment called Halliburton for Dummies yesterday or the day before. It was great radio--unprecedented on commercial AM radio, as far as I know.

7. She takes jabs @ Al all the time, Examples...
She gets all up at arms about how she's not a 'STAR' indicating that something is different for her because she isn't.

That she's the only one there with radio experience indicating that no one else does.

She didn't like that Al didn't introduce her to one of his guests

She complains about the fact that she has a different studio than the 'stars'

She complains that she didn't get invited to the Washington Press Corps dinner

She almost laughed when she talked about Al's possible run for congress in MN

She mentioned yesterday that everyone else there hates her and that she only gets along and liked Janeane Garofalo

Bragged in the beginning that she was the only one with a 4hour slot because she was in radio a long time.

In the beginning she bragged constantly that she doesn't do guests nor does she need anyone else to do a show (co-hosts). That she did her show alone because she's been in radio for years. I noticed however, that her show got better after Tim Allen came up and he's on the air with her)

I posted on Randi's site that she didn't have to do that. That she was good and taking jabs was beneath her.

9. This makes me like her less. I can't STAND prima donnas.
Edited on Thu May-20-04 11:15 AM by BurtWorm
Half of what they do is say how great they are. :puke:

PS: I forgot to alternate with something positive:

Good thing: Jeesh. I've run out of good things! Um....She's Brooklyn born. There.

6. bad: she's a bit close minded
too opinionated. she doesn't 'listen' to any point of view but her own, and that's dangerous.

(btw, i totally agree your bad BurtWorm)

good: she's funny and does have a grasp on history in relation to current affairs.

8. Personally, I don't get your thing about her being too opinionated.
Isn'tthat what talk radio is about. IF you didn't have an opinion the show would be boring.

10. it kinda goes along
with the close mindedness. when someone refuses to allow other opinions to be heard and examined and question their own,
then you got yourself a vacuum.

the format of the show works for her but, she couldn't cut it in
a different setting.

12. I gotta agree with you, buddhamomma.
Several times I've heard her cut off a caller who was making a point she didn't quite get because it didn't fit her perfectly constructed worldview. For example, she slammed one guy who was making the point that Democrats needed to organize and get people to the polls, the way they did in Chicago in the days of the ward captains. Randi claimed that sounded like a Republican tactic, like cheating. Cheating! To get out the vote! And to make it worse, she got all self-righteous about how wrong getting out the vote is!

And her mantra about not cutting and running...what the hell good is keeping the forces in Iraq if the Iraqis don't want them there. The issue is not whether the US should "stay and finish the job" (because the "job" US forces were there to do isn't clear in the first place) but what is best for the Iraqi people. Does it help or hurt the cause of Iraqi independence if the US stays or goes? Randi doesn't seem to get this. (Al Franken made clear yesterday that he's starting to get it. He, like Randi, has been hewing to the "Don't cut and run" line. But yesterday he did ask the question whether that was what the Iraqis actually wanted.)

13. I understand where you are coming from on that. Cuz sometimes the
callers are right and she still blasts them out of the sky.

Stream went down.

14. Good thing: She's on our side.
Bad thing: She comes across as somewhat of a bulldozer on the radio, which is something I don't really enjoy. I think it's got to do with the tone of her voice. I'd prefer if she sounded more passionate and less contentious.

17. not my intention Buddhama
:loveya:

I remember once Depak Chopra was on Politically incorrect, and the topic was Woody Allen and his relationship to - I can't remember her name - his now wife, Mia Farrow's daughter. And Chopra was saying Bill Maher's disappointment with Allen was proportional to how much he had idealized Allen, all of the positive traits he had projected onto him, and therefore felt betrayed. Maher was having none of it - but do think we tend to project our good qualities and our negative qualities onto celebrities, and therefore are either in awe of them or feel let down by them.

Sometimes I cringe at how Rhodes will treat a given caller, but then she'll turn around and treat someone else like a long lost friend. I guess if you listen to her long enough it all balances out in the end, like with good friends.

I'll shut up now.
