4. Art Carney originated the role on Broadway
I never saw it of course but that would have been interesting.

I prefer Jack Lemmon

6. Apparently Walter Matthau wanted the role of Felix too.
Edited on Thu May-20-04 01:12 PM by elperromagico
He said to Neil Simon, "I can phone in Oscar. Felix would be a challenge."

Walter Matthau as Felix Unger - now that would have been interesting...

5. I preferred Lemmon's interpretation.
God rest Tony Randall's soul, but his Felix never struck me as likable at all. Lemmon's Felix was a nice guy who had the capacity to get on your nerves, but he was still likable.

8. The odd Couple is one of my favorite movies
It's one of those movies that I can watch over and over and it never gets old. So I guess I like Jack Lemmon's Felix better.

However I do enjoy the TV show. I usually catch it after Saturday Mets games on channel 11. There's just something about that show that makes it more enjoyable on lazy Saturday afternoons!

9. Lemmon was great, but Randall made "Felix" his own...
I DO like the movie and have watched it a few times, but Randall was great for the TV version. I've been watching the re-runs in recent months, and it really was a smart show, for the time. Conventional and sit-com-y, yeah, but it had an edge and a grace to it. As far as mainstream fare goes, it was one of the good ones. And I love Murray the Cop.

And let's not forget: Randall as Felix was the first "gay" character on TV. It's all in the subtext, and frankly, that subtext wasn't buried too deeply, know what I mean? Nudge-nudge, wink-wink.
