Anybody watch "Colonial House"?
It's on PBS. A reality show in which all of these people live as colonists would back in 1628. I liked it. Thought it is one of the most intriguing reality shows I have ever watched. You have the right-wing Texas preacher- he's the Governor- and his family, then you have his assistant governor and town preacher who is a liberal academic. His wife is one too, I believe she's an anthropologist. Then you have a family of atheists, and a couple wild goofballs who like to drink. It's an interesting mix for sure. I recommend you all check it out. Here's the link. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/colonialhouse/

1. I love it!!! I love the couple who are non believers. The governor
really irritates the heck out of me with his "holier than thou", gay people are sinners who need to be shown the proper path away from their sin attitude". Although I did feel badly for the daughter when her fiance' died.

The atheist husband was a stitch when he was tying his wife up after the Sabbath. "I usually give out blankets, but I think not for you, Have fun". They seem like a terrific couple.

The laws aren't lasting very long though, are they?

:hi:

Wasn't he the one who thought the governor wasn't serious enough about making sure the colonists followed the law (to make it a more authentic experience)? Interesting! Then again, I've met several Roman era/medieval/Civil War re-enactors who can almost get carried away about "authenticity".

Wasn't it ironic that the atheist husband had been appointed as the law enforcement official ...

Re: other historical "reality shows" -- so far I've seen ones on a Victorian country manor, and urban homes from 1900 and 1940 (with wartime rationing) -- and the series that looked at Roman legionaries, medieval knights, etc. Really informative, what with the differences in class/gender attitudes and technology. I normally don't like reality TV much, but I make an exception for most of the historical shows.

2. It's the first reality show concept that sounds bearable.
Figures it's on PBS. I'm getting old at 35.

3. They've done a few of them. One of my favorites was Frontier House.
They put a bunch of families out on the frontier and they had to try and build a home and stock up enough supplies to make it through an 1850's winter. It was so rough on them that one couple ended up separating as a result of the show. :hi:

4. What was funny about Frontier House
was the last episode, where they visited the families, and the multimillionaire took a rabbit that he and his son hunted in Malibu, declaring it proof that he could've made it as a pioneer.

I felt sorry for that kid. Classic case of a gentle son and an overbearing, obnoxious father.

8. I hated that family
The dad was such a flaming asshole. I hope he was a Republican because he fits my image of one.

7. I like all I've seen of this series and the others.
But what tickles me is that the women get Pissed Off real quick. It's not fair that we have to try to cook with this stove he messed up installing, and it just pours smoke into the house. He gets to go to the barbershop to be groomed and then to work, and we sweat all day. I have to go to two stores a day just to get enough food for us for three meals, because we don't have an ice box and nothing keeps. It takes me a trip to the woodpile and two trips to the well, or the creek, just to get enough water to make a pot of coffee. I don't want to cover my head, it's too hot. How am I supposed to get the wash done when these men don't even have enough cut wood to boil the water. Don't you dare change clothes now, I don't care how they smell, and I haven't got the chance to make soap, and you only wore them three days. I don't see why I need to be taking care of the cow when I can't even get enough water to take a bath. I hate not wearing makeup. I have no underwear. I'm having my period, shit. What do we do for birth control, shit. I'm too tired and pissed off anyway.

This good stuff ought to be required viewing for the young-uns.

Why, when I was a kid, we had only three channels. And my parents just tucked the pesky seat belts under the seats. We didn't have no fancy athletic shoes; no, we wore canvas things that wore out in about 14 minutes, but they were bought big so that they would last.
