Has anyone hear ever lost their temper with a Freeper-type person?
I have, twice. I'm not proud of myself, and since I've joined DU I've gotten much better at sticking to the facts, not resorting to anger. But I was one of the two liberals in my high school Participation in Government class last semester, and I have... a temper.

Incident #1: Debate on gay marriage. One guy, a real Bush lover, made a disparaging comment on gays; I responded with, "If you really believe that, I feel sorry for you."

Incident #2: Debate on was on Iraq. Another guy (also a Bush lover and extremely pro-military) was making the argument that Saddam "obviously" was helping Osama, because they're both terrorists. I got so fed up that I just said, in a real nasty voice, "Wow, I can't believe you just said that. Do you even read the newspapers?"

1. There's always the noncombative,
"Well, you're certainly entitled to your opinion."

3. my friend, over e-mail and in person
he gets his info from Hannity. I regularly call him ignorant, and say: " that might be the dumbest thing I ever heard." I dismantle his arguments piece by piece, and pretty rudely. I roll the eyes. Sigh. Everything. I'm very intolerant of the ignorant. I need to work on that.

23. Why?
I'm equally intolerant of the ignorant and don't feel a need to change. I don't think you should, either. There's only so many hoops one can jump through in the quest to be tolerant and inclusive of everyone, and I think leaving the ignorant out is perfectly acceptable.

4. A good reason for gun control!
I know what you mean; I can't seem to stay calm with Freepers, either. Also, sometimes I wonder how many people would still be alive today if someone who had gotten angry hadn't been carrying a gun. It just seems too easy sometimes; we hear aboust this often--an argument, a gun, one dead person, another imprisoned person. What a waste.

You have to remember tho, there is NO tone in your written word and it's up to the reader to infer your emotions.. even things said in the nicest possbile way can go badly astray.

6. oh heck many times
Now that I'm older and more accepting of human stupidity, I can stay calm when some idiot is claiming some claim. They are the great brainwashed, and beating them about the face and shoulders doesn't really accomplish anything (except making you feel better).

Edited on Thu May-20-04 06:48 PM by JustFiveMoreMinutes
So if you're within 3 or 4 years of HS age, I personally can overlook your comments, but if you're older and supposedly wiser, perhaps you'd like to rephrase your comments/questions?

14. Actually...
The guy who made the Iraq comment is joining the Navy next month, after graduation. Because of that, I have some respect for him because he's not a chickenhawk hypocrite, but it's so depressing to see so many of the guys--boys, really--from my school joining the army and navy.

8. Yes, last Fall
I was taking A&P 2 and my lab partner was this 50 year old Freeper guy. He kept rambling on about something (can't even remember what) and I decided to hammer him. I got one of those "why worry your pretty little head?" patronizing comments. Then I hammered some more. He then said, "I'll never bring up politics with you again." :7

Edited on Thu May-20-04 06:49 PM by LastKnight
thiers more bushfolk around here than in the amazon... anyway, also a extreamly large intollerance for the left out here in SD (oddly 2 democratic senators and likley to be a democratic rep after the special election too)

but just the average leftie they hate... i dont hide my political choices, but using bumper stickers will get your car keyed around here. a window sticker almost got me T-boned, the first time drove with it on. but thats another story.

it takes alot to get me angry, so i just shrug them off for the idiots that they are. and i usuially end up laughing it off, because most of the ones smart enough to try and debate me (instead of swearing/spitting/yelling at me) are about 20-50 years older than me and have less of an education... and im still technically in high school (for a few more days, anyway).

I TOLD YOU SO! We warned them about getting into Iraq, we warned them about the tax cuts, we warned them about "No Child Left Behind", we warned them about Medicare prescription benefits, etc, etc, etc. I think we're showing incredible restraint and maturity by not saying; "nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah"! Have you said "I told you so" yet?

i told em...

15. I try to use my words carefully
because I feel that I am a representative of my faith. As such, I must practice tolerance, mercy, and compassion. There have been many times on boards where freepers are allowed where I've had to switch to DU to calm down.

Only once did I confront anti-Islamic ignorance with less than dispassion. I burst into tears-but it stopped the argument, as I embarrassed the fellow who was making the intolerant remarks (Good Old Boys don't make old ladies cry, you see!)

26. I don't know -- I've found laughing and rolling my eyes to be
One of the most effective responses to random wingnuttiness. A well-placed sigh with a patronizing 'whatever' is also useful. Thing is, most of the ones around here expect everybody to enthusiastically agree with them, and if you don't agree with them, you're supposed to duel to the death, which means they get to shout 'commie' at you in the grocery line and cast aspersions on your parents and the legitimacy of your birth using grammar that would have caused me to have to repeat the third grade. I don't really feel like inconveniencing either myself or the checkers (or waitstaff, or whatever), so I use disgust or contempt to make it clear I'm not getting into a discussion about it while still putting them at a disadvantage. They don't know how to deal with amusement and contempt, so they usually just turn red, steam from the ears and stalk away. I don't argue well, I get flustered -- contempt and amusement are my best weapons, these days.

27. Emotion is the enemy of reason
No matter how pissed I might be deep down, I try very hard not to give in to it and respond with anything smacking of a personal attack.

Stick to the facts.

On a good day, in a debate where I am very familiar with the facts, I am very good at driving freeper types up a wall, because I will shoot down every one of their arguments in a perfectly logical manner. I am deadly in a debate on ballistic missile defence or creation vs evolution.

The most hardcore creationists often end up backed into a corner claiming that all reality is a fantasy designed to shield us from the truth. I guess they took the blue pill.

We went to Prep school in the late 60's...I hadn't seen them in 25 years...a lovely lunch after a walk about town and the old school site. Then dinner...then drinks. All three affairs were punctuated with homo-phobic comments,Anti Clinton Rushesque snide remarks, and finally the "N-Word" comments.

Ta-Ta! Bye! Bye! was my reply.:nopity:
