Depp close to managing Burton`s CHOCOLATE FACTORY
Today's Variety reports that Johnny Depp has been offered the role of Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's remake of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Negotiations have begun between Depp's agents and the movie's studio, Warner Bros. The thespian is in a strong position to earn a lot of gold coins; Depp's last film, Disney's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, is a $250 million dollar blockbuster.

was a good movie. I think Burton/Depp could bring it to a "new level," but both are so creative and gifted I'm sad it has to come to some "remake" of "Willy Wonka."

Geeze can't these "Hollywood Types" get a Grip? Why can't Tim and Johnny get together on a new "visionary" flick that can "come alive for us," and change our way of thinking.

I don't know Burton's politics, but Depp left America because he didn't want to raise his child in our corrupt atmosphere. What does this say!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????

On Edit: typos and mispellings......and I'm so upset that Depp would consider re-doing the original "Willy" that I'm all out of sorts.....

2. I'm looking forward to this movie
Personally, I was never keen on the first Willy Wonka movie. First, the book was "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" not "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", which is the name of the movie that Gene Wilder starred in.

I also felt the original movie strayed far from the book and got a little too cutsie for my taste when the book had a slight macrebe about it.

Tim Burton's Chocolate Factory movie will look nothing like the movie that came out in 1971. In fact, Tim is using the original name of the book which makes me believe he'll stay closer to the story and of course add the Burton "eeriness" that is trademark of Tim Burton movies.

I'm looking forward to his production!

10. Blame Bush and his crappy economy.
That's why they aren't taking chances with visionary pieces. They want sure things.

That's why there are so many remakes, sequels, books to film, comics to film, etc... They're guaranteed cash in the bank. That's how you know we're really in a crap economy. When the economy picks up again, it'll get better, LOL.

3. Woo Hoo another Johnny thread
Word is Roald Dahl never liked the original with Gene Wilder, eventhough Dahl himself helped create the script.

I understand this would probably not be a musical, and truer to the original vision of the book.

If anybody could pull off being a demented chocolatier, it would be Johnny Depp. :loveya:

4. While I think they're definitely a great team for the job....
...they're going to have to cope with constant comparisons to the first movie, which has achieved something like a cult following.

Methinks there would have been a better payoff for doing the sequel, "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator", building on the legend rather than attempting to one-up it.

6. That's true
I have as yet to see him do something that struck a note of cognative dissonance with me, i.e. just wasn't believeable in the part.

7. Just don't make Johnny Depp eat chocolate
rumor has it that Depp grew so weary of eating chocolate during the filming of the movie "Chocolat" that he would spit out the chocolate immediately after any scene where he had to take a bit.
