Poll question: Soldier wallpaper on a workplace computer: what to do?
Edited on Thu May-20-04 07:38 PM by forradalom
My husband said to me this morning, "One of my co-workers, a reservist, has as his wallpaper a picture of two soldiers, obviously from this war. Now, in my opinion war is obscene, especially this one. I don't think it belongs in the workplace. What should I do?"

1. First, depends who the picture is of--it might be people the guy knows,
which puts an entirely diffferent spin on the situation.

What if they are friends or relatives?

2. Counter it with a "horrors of war" wallpaper...
A strange idea, I know, but if somebody says they're offended by a picture of a child with missing limbs, your husband can say "well, I'm offended by the war that caused this atrocity."

Just a thought. :)

8. I second that, big time!
If more people saw what the hell war does to the people they're conditioned to hate, then people might take a more mature approach to living and dealing with others.

(this is why American 'entertainment' shoves violence down peoples' throats. To desensitize them.)

4. Ignore it
If it's just a picture of two soldiers, what's to get worked up about? And also consider the sad fact that, as a reservist, your husband's co-worker may not be at his desk much longer.

5. I'm with you on that. Now if it was a pic of Shrub then that would
that'd be emotional abuse.

7. Nothing.
You really don't have much of a leg to stand on with this one.

10. So, if I put an image of my son
a Marine headed for Baghdad in June (as part of the "transfer") on my screensaver, then I'm a bad person? I'm a liberal. My son is a liberal. And a Marine. Now, I didn't appreciate a co-worker's image of GWB (drawn like a muscle-bound Uncle Sam) "opening up a can of whup-ass" on the Iraqis...so I guess I'm pretty intolerant, also.

12. Lighten up
They may be friends of his- if I get called I'll send you a picture of me in Iraq. I'm a "reservist"- you say it like it is an insult. Don't forget soldiers don't start wars, stupid politicians do.

13. Reservist is not an insult
and this young man is back from his service.

A colleague of mine served in Kuwait. I have the utmost respect for him.

I answered "put up your own wallpaper." Counter free speech with more free speech, that's what I say.

14. Wallpaper
By "his computer" I assume you mean your husband's, so I voted for the anti-war wallpaper. It's not anything that he should make a big deal of otherwise. I have a picture screensaver that flips through pictures ranging from (anti-Bush) political cartoons to maps to a few pictures from my firearms collection to pictures of my kids.

Within reason, wallpaper is fair game for personal expression.
