Cooks...why the chest pounding?
Reading some of the threads here on different cooking methods and or types of foods, I notice that a lot of people want to express that they have the best or make the best.
What I have noticed, even before getting on the net is that a lot of men tend to believe they can prepare foods better than anyone else. Of course there are a lot of women who do this also, but men seem to really pound their chests about how great they are at the culinary arts. I have done it before also, but I really only do my own cooking at home for myself these days, so I have no one I can impress.
My question here is...what is it that makes you think that your techniques and food preparations are the best? Is it an ego thing? I know it can be an art, but in most arts (I'm an artist of sorts) you don't see people really saying how their technique is the best. For example "Pastels are the ONLY way to go...oils are for the wanna-be's".
I'm just curious about this. And if this thread makes no sense, I'm sorry. My writing technique is not the best.

1. A lot of it is
the male tendency to turn everything into a competition, even the food we eat. And not a little bit of regionalism, as in the "Who has the best BBQ" thread. :-D

It's just a bit of silliness here in the Lounge. I wouldn't worry about it.

3. I'm not really worried about it.
I noticed this well before I came here. I guess it is that competing nature we have. I have never really been competitive. I sucked in all sports, and I am still single..lol. Maybe I should work on my competition skills. I just don't have the time to compete though.

2. I am the best
at making food that tastes good to me. Seasoned correctly with not too much salt but plenty of pepper and zip.

Others enjoy my cooking as well. But my brother makes better bread than I do, he uses his own recipes. In cooking other things he is an uneven cook, making some things well and botching others.

In cooking we all make mistakes. Except, of course, the President of my Company, she makes the best Indian food I have ever tasted.

4. hmm, what are we talking about here?
"Pastels are the ONLY way to go...oils are for the wanna-be's".

technique or ego?

My spouse is a professional in the culinary field and he really does make the best of a lot of things but at the same time, I've never, ever heard him say he makes the best of anything.

5. Well...
That was my question. Is it technique or ego? As I said, I know that some people look at cooking as an art (I do). I also know some people in the culinary field, and you are right...they don't pound their chest. I'm probably just not too clear on this. It's funny, I have written music and lyrics for most of my life. I have written poetry and express myself in so many different way. But when it comes to conversation, I even confuse myself.

6. Huh? I mean, I a damn good cook...
...but I'd rather eat a meal prepared by Alice Waters or Alain Ducasse.

Hell, I'll just stay local -- I'd rather eat a meal prepared by Odessa Piper or Sandy D'Amato.

7. It's a Camaro for the new century
:)

Sexiest things about a man tend to include whether they can cook. Add to the list being funny and owning a clean home.

Sadly, these gold chains are just nowhere's-ville. :D
