My 11 year old was the hero in his Little League game last night.
Bottom of the 7th (that is the first extra inning in Little League), trailing 1-0, runners on 2nd and 3rd. With two outs and two strikes against him he laced a line drive into the left field corner scoring both runners and winning the game. I try not to be a stereotypical Little League parent, but I swear I had tears in my eyes watching his team mates mob him on the field and listening to the fans in the stands chant his name. I love him unconditionally and would do so even if he could not chew gum and walk at the same time; but I'm glad he had that moment.

1. Kudos to the hero!
I can relate to everything in your post.

You know, he'll remember that moment (and others like it) forever.

2. Make sure to mention it from time to time
Don't just let it drop. I've been in your kid's situation, and trust me - even in adulthood, a game-winning hit never gets old.

3. It is a great boost in self confidence!
My boys 6,7, and 8 play little league. This is their 3rd season (it is instructional, not competitive) but this is the first year they have shown substantial improvement and it is so great to see them feel good about the terrific job they are doing!

My 8 year old hit a home run in the first game of the season and he is still smiling 2 weeks later! It is not about being stereotypical, it is about watching your kids grow and make great achievements. You have every right to be the proud parent and pat your son on the back several times! It is great for their self-confidence, which kids need!

Congratulate him for me! :)

4. That made my day.
I haven't had the privilege of having my own children, but it is always great to hear proud parents talk of their children's accomplishments. You have every right to be proud.

5. Wow!! Tell him congratulations. That's great.
Nothing like the feeling of a walk-off extra base hit.

You know......that reminds me of the time when I was 10 and in LL. I had been called up from the 'Minors'...the 9 & 10 year old league, to play in the 'Show'...the mostly 11 & 12 year old league.

It was only my second or third game up, and I hit a double down the left-field line to win the game in the bottom of the 6th. A walk-off double against a pitcher who was about twice my size. I remember feeling over-matched as I strode to the plate....but I came out on top.

It was about 35 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday.

6. Congratulations!
As the mother of a 13 year old, i can tell you that 11 is the best age to have a success like that - the confidence will carry over to middle school and help in all areas of his life, which is wonderful. Good for your son!!! And good for you!!!

7. Way cool!
As a former Little League mom, and Little League President, I can assure you that there's nothing wrong w/ being proud of a kid having a moment like that.

Heck, even when someone else's kid on someone else's team did that, I'd cheer too. A good hit is a good hit.

8. No feeling like that in the world...
Congrats!

My kids are playing t-shirt league (little leage 7-9 y/o) and t-ball.

J, my older boy was at practice last night and just missed stabbing a line drive playing third base. He almost had it. If I had his glove softened up he would have held on to it. The next hit he took right in the ribs. Poor kid. He walked it off like a champ though.

My younger boy is the biggest kid on his t-ball team. He is hilarious. All the other kids look like little kids in uniforms. My boy looks like a 1/4 size big-leaguer. His gut hangs over his beltline, and with his round face and huge cheeks, he looks like an old time player with two wads of chew in his mouth.

He smacked a pitched ball into right field during his last game and as he came around the bases, all the parents were chanting "Cheeks! Cheeks! Cheeks!"

It is a good feeling...

JM

9. Good for Him!
Many people grow up wihtout ever having a moment that resembles that. He will remember that his whole life. I'm absolutely sure, from personal experience, that this is true.

12. I love Little League! It is WAY better than pro ball. You...
...never know what you are going to see and the players are so much more mature! :)

Congrats to your little one! :)
