I've Figured Out What The Cicada Chorus Sounds Like...
Edited on Fri May-21-04 11:25 AM by arwalden
They remind me of the synthesized sci-fi B-movie sound effects from the 50's and 60's.

Their singing reminds me of the sound made by the laser-beam death ray in War of the Worlds... or the engine/generator sounds in Forbidden Planet.

1. Yeah, that just about says it
Can you imagine what the Indians must have thought and felt? Would they have worshipped the cicadas? Would they have eaten them?

4. well, there's actually a record
from Jamestown, which had the misfortune of being in a cicada year. The locals told the colonists that the cicadas brought plague and death. The Colonists laughed. and then were swept by small pox that fall, losing half the colony.

oops.

3. Awww, man?
Reminds me of sitting on granny's front porch swing on a summer afternoon.
Big sweating glass of iced tea.
Homade ginger snaps.
Granny telling me stories about when she was a little girl.
They didn't even have electric lights.
UNBELIEVABLE!
Granny must be spoofin' me.

5. It sounds like this:
"I, I don't wanna say it
I don't wanna find another way
Make it trough the day without you
I, I can't resist
Try to find exactly what I missed
It's just another day without you"

6. Cicadas are constant background noise in Japan in late summer
and one August, I took a group of students over to start their semester in Yokohama.

Because of jet lag, none of us slept too soundly that first night, and besides, Japan has no daylight saving time, so sunrise seems to come unusually early in the summer.

The next morning at breakfast, the students asked me whether there were any major power lines nearby.

Not knowing the area, I had no idea, and I wondered why they were asking.

"That electrical buzzing sound," they explained.

"Oh," I said, "those were the cicadas."

"Cicadas?" one of them repeated uncertainly. "How do you say that in English?"
