I got dissed by an American Idol
Not really, but it makes a better sound bite than, I muttered his name and he probably didn't hear me.

Yesterday I was early for an appt. in midtown Manhattan, so I was looking around for a place to grab a cup of coffee and crossing right in front of me was last year's winner. He was kind of hard not to recognize.

I wanted to Hi, Mr. Studdard, because I thought it would be polite to address him that way, but I had a brain freeze and couldn't remember his last name. So I kind of meekly said, Reubon....and, okay, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he didn't hear me. Or he was fanned out for the day and couldn't muster another smile for masses, anyway he just didn't even give a look my way. And I was going to polite and not even say anything about American Idol sucking and everyting too!

2. His name's RuuuuuuuuuubEN
LOL

Heck.

I'm sure the "public" stuff gets old quick.

Mild eye contact and a slight nod are how you should acknowledge a celebrity in day to day contact I'm told.

3. I usually handle it on a situation to situation basis
Certain people you know not to approach - others I've had some spontaneous fun with. My favorite was Rob Morrow, he was approaching me - and again, I had brain lock, couldn't remember his name and stammered, after he had passed me, I said over my shoulder, I really like your work, and when I looked back, he looked back over his shoulder, smiled and mouthed the words, Thank you. It was very fun. I had a similar encounter with Wallace Shawn, when people aren't mega celebs I think they like to hear their work is appreciated.

Sometimes you get a total - do not appraoch vibe and I always respect that.
