or any of his other movies. It definitely is different and I quite enjoyed it. Unfortunately I had the flue at the time so it all was a bit fuzzy. I will go and see it again if it comes back to town. Also, Isabella Rossellini is soo gorgeous.

A queen of business, the Great Depression, a Canadian town dying of boredom in a blizzard, prohibition, two brothers who hate each other, and an amnesiac woman caught between them all converge during a music contest, a contest to unearth the saddest music in the world. According to the business queen, the sadder the song, the more people will want to drink. Guy Maddin, the Winnipeg filmmaker of superabundant imaginative power, returns with one of his most complete films, a work magnificent in its richness and originality. Known for his strange and poetic retro-reveries (Twilight of The Ice Nymphs, Heart of The World), Maddin's latest is halfway between melodrama and musical comedy, rolling to the rhythm of tight editing and punctuated by some of the blackest of black humour. Between black and white and colour, between laughter and tears, on baroque studio sets, a number of countries compete for the crown of saddest music. The Saddest Music in the World is an astonishing modern musical featuring meticulous art direction and some truly magical visual touches. It is a Canadian film, to the very last song.
