11. Air Force pilots fly INSIDE of their planes
Not on top of them

Otherwise, they're mirror images of each other

4. Is the Air Force
a pathway to the space program and astronauthood?

Who gets to be a test pilot?

Do pilots get "assigned" to a particular aircraft, or is it like that scene in "Black Sheep Squadron" where the mechanic calls all the planes his? (No, not a favorite show; it used to be on after "In Search Of...")

6. Members of any service can vie for Astronaut service
John Glenn was a Marine, fer instance
Civilians can too.

Test pilot is a special duty. Pilots have to apply to be accepted.

Officers are selected for a particular platform well before their assignment.
The kicker is that they must be physically, practically and academically able to fly whatever plane that they are destined for.

7. I got a friend in S. Korea right now
He has been in AF for 12 yrs now. He is planning on retiring. My question is... The other day I read that the AF was going to try to transfer some of there troops to the Army, because the AF has to many troops and the Army doesn't have enough. They wouldn't try to transfer someone with 12 yrs in would they?

You enlist for a particular service, they can't make you change.

You can get out and reenlist for a another service.

The Army is going to have to find its own cannon fodder, they won't get it from the USAF

13. Cool Thanks
I didn't want to piss him off by asking him. I figured it was BS. He is stationed in NJ when he is stateside. My brother retired from the Navy after 18 yrs.

I just want to thank you also for your service, and for all you do to keep us safe. :)

16. Never crossed the equator
The closest I came was the Phillipines. Which, BTW is still in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Navy does that shit, though.

They can keep it.

17. Why Do Presidents Fly In And Out Of Andrews Instead Of Bolling?
Bolling is closer to DC, so it makes more sense to use that base. Doesn't it.

Also, what happened to TAC? Why was it deactivated? (if that's the correct term)

-- Allen <-- also closer to Bolling than Andrews.

19. Bolling has no airfield
Planes can't land there.

The Air Force was reorganized and TAC and SAC became the Air Combat Command, HQ'd at Langley AFB VA

18. Is the Air Force the Navy?
Sorry I couldn't resist :)

I had a cousin in the USAF who said the first class they were taught was what the Air Force was and wasn't - and the whole thing was bulleted THE AIR FORCE IS NOT THE ARMY...NOT THE NAVY...NOT THE MARINES...etc

Someone here posted a What is the Army thread a while back that was pretty similar, so I'm guessing everyone in the service gets this class.

23. It was that way in 75 also...
Test scores had to be higher to get in the USAF.

I was at Castle AFB 75-78. Were you ever there? Is it still there?

We were called SAC-trained killers. Tongue firmly in cheek, of course.

Family legacy? Family pressure? Friends? Careful research? Liked the uniforms? Wanted to fly cool jets?
