Concerts: Who Have You Seen Live?
Here's my list (in rough chronological order.)

Nine Inch Nails w/Marilyn Manson and Jim Rose as openers

1994 HFStival: Afghan Whigs, Pavement, Henry Rollins Band, Meat Puppets, Counting Crows, and some others that I don't remember

White Zombie w/Babes in Toyland as openers

Rancid w/Rocket From the Crypt as openers

NOFX

1998 Warped Tour: Bad Religion, Hatebreed, CIV, NOFX, Rancid, Kid Rock (before he made it "big"...bleccch!) and a bunch of other bands I don't remember

Tori Amos

Iron Maiden w/Motorhead and Dio as openers

Life of Agony

*****************

I don't think I forgot any, and I purposely didn't list all the small, cramped, punk/hardcore shows I've been to 'cause there's way too many of those to list!

So how about you? Who have you seen? B-)

84. Another Old Fart....
I saw a concert in 1968 starring Judy Garland, Tony Bennett, and Woody Allen. Poor Judy could hardly stand up; she never did get around to singing. Aside from that, not many, though I did see the Grass Roots, Canned Heat, Ray Stephens, and Kenny Rogers and the First Edition in Chattanooga the next year. I was always more into collecting records than attending concerts.

94. Still another old fart . . .

Lived in the stix as a kid, so really didn't start concert-going until college.

Santana, Moody Blues, Bachman Turner Overdrive (I confess), Carol King, Joni Mitchell (with that prominent jazz band she toured with), the Eagles (Hotel California), Chicago (twice, and once with the Beach Boys), Fleetwood Mac (Rumours), Jackson Brown (the "Pretender"), the Ramones (in a converted bowling alley in West Hartford, CT--I died my hair green), Beaver Brown, Asleep at the Wheel, the Pretenders, Cyndi Lauper (at the old Ritz ballroom in NYC), Bruce Springsteen (twice--once at the Meadowlands during the "Born in the USA" tour), Tower of Power (with Average White Band), Joe Ely (from Texas--3 times), K.D.Lang (with Joe Ely), Robert Cray (with Little Feat), Son Seals (blues--does that count?--twice).

Concerts that I missed because of work: Bob Seger (ARGH! and I'm from Michigan originally), the Police (I still hate that boss), and the Pretenders (the first time).

I try not to think about all the times I tried to get my friends to go in the past 10-15 years. They've all become complete wimps. Either that, or I don't want to grow up (wasn't that a late Ramones song?).

Santana, Creedence Clearwater, It's a Beautiful Day... interestingly, all in the same evening at Winterland in San Francisco (1968) when they were still moving up.

:hippie:

ON EDIT: Saw Yitzhak Perlmann recently, too. He was in-freaking-credible! :loveya:

3. The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl
I was a mere child, taken by my parents.

In college, it was all Grateful Dead, all the time. Lost count of the number of concerts.

Then there was Sha-Na-Na which was a hoot. And a cool Chick Corea concert in Portland, Oregon. And I hate to admit it, but I went to a Doobie Brothers and Eagles concert in Oakland once.

Now I just go to smallish jazz and blues performances. Can't stand the huge crowds any more.

91. Hmm let's see
Rush(three or four times), Triumph, Johnny Winter and Roy Buchanan(may he rest in peace), Stevie Ray Vaughn (not long before he died),
Pat Metheny a couple of times, Michael Hedges(again just before he died), Bryan Adams when he was cool. If you're from the Boston area there are few bands I saw The Fools, John Butcher Axis (anyone remember him?), John Cafferty and Beaver Brown Band(hey, there were from Rhode Island!). Oh yeah and a once good Boston Band called the Stompers.
A few openers I saw-Steve Morse Band, Leslie West and Mountain, Shaboo All-Stars. Huey Lewis and the News(not as an opener).

Oh yeah and the three shows that were the pinnacle of my concert going

Jimmy Buffet, twice at the Tweeter Center and the last show I went to- Eric Clapton, the man is GOD!

I am probably showing my age here!

4. Haven't been to a rock concert since the 80s.
I can't stand the volume. Don't get me wrong, I like classic rock, and I like it loud, but bone-shaking loud for overpriced tickets is not my cup of tea.

But I saw Mandy Patinkin live a few years ago, and I don't think I've spent a more awe-inspiring two hours in my life.

NIN/David Bowie

KORN(they were a great live show during their first album)

Slipknot (also a great live show)

tons of bands no one has ever heard of...

Tool

Fantomas

A Perfect Circle

thats off the top of my head right now...I've never liked going to shows that much unless the band goes insane. I like to be entertained.

8. good lord how much time do you have?
I made up a list last year just for fun and it went on for a couple pages.

How about some of my favorites:

Queen Ida ( zydeco) - probably the best dance show ever!
The Clash - Sandinista tour
The Ramones (several times, once in NYC)
Patti Smith (twice in two years- one full band, one acoustic)-astonishing
The Roches
Robyn Hitchcock
Youssou N'Dour
Peter Gabriel, Sinead, Crowded House and a host of others
Muddy Waters
The Mekons
Sun Ra in NYC
Geri Allen, Dorothy Donegan and Marian McPartland tribute to MAry Lou Williams
Art Ensemble of Chicago
Richard Thompson - funny and a great guitar player
Odetta
King Missile
Yo La Tengo
Jad Fair
Calvin, et al from K records
The Replacements- they were a drunken mess!
10,000 Maniacs before they were famous
Albert Collins RIP
Don Byron

Well that's probably enough. Thanks for the reminder! :)

those are the ones that stick in my mind

42. "unless the band goes insane"
I like that. :) I know what you mean...it doesn't seem worth it unless you know the band/singer is going to give you their complete exhaustive all. I've been fortunate that most of the big concerts I've seen have been like that (esp. Tori, NIN, Rancid, NOFX, Iron Maiden, and most recently Life of Agony, which was perhaps the greatest, most exhilerating show I've been to.

Oh, and how was Fantomas? Mike Patton is a god, in my book!

6. Many, many
but the Bee Gees stand out as the most surreal experience. Sitting in the nosebleeds, whacked, wondering why the hell anyone would pay decent money to see them, then realizing, of course, that I did. But, of course, it was different for us - we went to make fun of them. Sigh, it really seemed like a good idea.

Worst concert? Tie between Van Halen - what I think was the last one with David prior to the first break up - horrid, lots of running off stage for Coke breaks, fondling a rubber doll. fast forward 20 years, the Smashing Pumkins. After the death of drummer and change of fhe keyboardist. Dreadful nois, they were bored, the audience was bored - when we walked out we were with a crowd of several hundred.

Favorites? Too numerous to recall all, but my first Springsteen show was great, an early Who show, The Feelies, Yo La Tengo and Husker Du come to mind.

Oh, you lucky bastard!! :D I am so envious! I have been a huge fan of theirs since I was 13, but have never been able to see them live. I pray that I will get to before they break up (hopefully they won't break up, but I have my fears that they will before I get to see them!)

When did you see them? I have some bootleg tapes from shows they did circa 1991, and they are intense. Some of the greatest shit I've ever heard. If you saw them around then, I am going to be even more envious!!

They are my favorite band, and the show was great. They had this young woman that played synthesizer and electric violin to fill in the Brian Eno/Eddie Jobson role, and she nailed the solo to "Out of the Blue"! It was so cool. http://www.manzanera.com/RoxyArchive/RoxyMusicTour2001/lucywilkinsbiog.htm

They have a website up that's put out by Phil Manzanera: http://www.roxymusic.co.uk
And here's some stuff about their reunion tour: http://www.manzanera.com/RoxyArchive/RoxyMusicTour2001/RoxyTour2001.htm

16. The Doors, The Stones, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Jethro Tull,
Jefferson Airplane, Dylan (1964 at Ravinia, just before he went electric), plus a bunch of others I can't bring to mind just now (what they say about remembering the sixties only if you weren't there, and I was definitely there)--but best of all THE DAVE CLARK FIVE!

And that's just the 60s + 1970, when I lived in Illinois and then, briefly, in NYC.

From the late 70s/early 80s, in fantastic L.A.?

Most of the local punk/New Wave bands, most especially the wondrous X, The Blasters, Wall of Voodoo, Surburban Lawns, Top Jimmy, Black Flag (only band I ever walked out on), plus the non-L.A. Talking Heads, Stray Cats, the Police...

& hope I die before I get old.

Seriously. You kidding? The way things are going?? Please...

34. Yep, remember Billy in his spread-leg stance, with that demonic
sweet smile and jackhammer style?

Damn I miss him & those days.

Last time I saw X was in 1993, in Santa Fe (the late Club Luna) with Tony Gilkyson on gittar. It was fucking weird, I can tell you. None of my old friends around me--and I'd been part of a large and vociferous crowd of X-worshippers in L.A.--and when I walked outside after the show, it was Fanta Se I walked into, not my late beloved L.A.

I love Santa Fe--and New Mexico in general--as only a 1/8 Comanche who has a bone-deep affinity for this part of the planet can--but after 12+ years here it's still not home to me the way the 1970-1991 L. A. was.

I have never loved anyplace on Earth as strongly and as irrationally as I love my L.A. of late beloved memory.

So I'm off to get drunk(er) and listen to Warren Zevon sing about Gower Avenue and the desperadoes under the eaves. Salud!

Saw them in the same time period. Their prediliction for bringing LAPD down on their shows was epic. Baces Hall with the Adolescents brought over a hundred cops in riot gear. Lots of blood. Great show though. Adolescents tore the roof off.

Edited on Sat May-22-04 01:29 PM by LandOLincoln
in-your-face discordant noise. No art there, that I could see anyway, and I'm one who has no problem seeing the art in, say, the Sex Pistols, Eminem--and the solo Henry Rollins, for that matter.

On edit: sorry, missed your "which version" question.

Original, as far as I know: Rollins, Greg Ginn...although I guess the '80-'81 time frame pretty much answers that question too, doesn't it?

37. Memory's coming back:
Edited on Sat May-22-04 03:20 PM by LandOLincoln
The aforementioned of course, plus:

Frankie Avalon & Fabian (my high school in 1958)
Chuck Berry (same, probably)
Taj Mahal
Miles Davis
Sly & The Family Stone
It's A Beautiful Day (sang backup on one of their albums, IIRC)
Pacific Gas & Electric
Argent (Former Zombies singer Rod Argent & Co.)
Traffic w/ Stevie Winwood
Eric Clapton
Rod Stewart
Kris Kristofferson
Cheap Trick

Okay, I'll come clean: in 1969-1970 I was in N.Y. working as a publicity writer for Columbia/Epic & going to the Fillmore East nearly every weekend, for free.

Is that cheating?

On edit:

Albert King, 1992, Santa Fe. Pretty sure I saw the Blues Boy too, once upon a time, but damned if I remember where or when. Probably '69-'70, NYC.

More edit (and getting a memory jog on reading other's lists):

Tom Rush
Arlo Guthrie
Phil Ochs
John Mayall
Delaney & Bonnie
Fleetwood Mac (early version--Oh Well, anybody?)
Savoy Brown
Queen Ida
Beausoleil
Texas Tornadoes
Warren Zevon
Cowboy Junkies
Dr. John
The Chieftains
Alan Stivell
The Clash
Patti Smith
Bowie (Slim White Duke Tour)

and can't believe I forgot one of the greatest, most cosmic & mind blowing concerts in the history of the universe (& I'm serious, dammit):

PINK FLOYD AT CARNEGIE HALL, MAY 1972

I was back in Illinois by then, temporarily, but flew to Boston to visit a friend, then on down to NYC especially for the concert. Friend from the Biz & I were sitting right behind a Deadhead, who assured us pre-show that while Floyd were good, of course they couldn't begin to compare to the Dead.

After the show his tune was a tad...different, shall we say? Slobbered, drooled, and pounded the back of his seat. Gushed over and over that this was the best thing he'd ever seen or heard in his life, bar none.

I thought so too...but then I caught Morrison on an off night, and the two times I saw the Stones were (1) in the huge MSG 1969, and (2) in the even huger Inglewood Forum 1975, plus I was tripping out of my mind.

So YMMV, most definitely.

44. Okay, this is the very, very last, and I would have added it to my
post above but the editing period has expired:

U2, by accident, when they filmed I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For etc. on the roof of a liquor store in downtown/Skid Row L.A. 1987 (I was on my way back to my office from the wholesale flower district).

Promptly relived my flaming youth by picking a fight with a cop.

Wull hell, the fuckers shut the show down early for "security reasons," even though they'd granted U2 the permit in the first place, and agreed in advance--or so the story went--to block traffic for several blocks around for the duration.

Daryl Gates is a meanmouthed redneck. He must be dead now, otherwise Gee Dubya would have found a prominent place for him...

51. "Biggest regret? No opportunity to see Jimi and Janis in concert."
I don't remember ever having the chance to see Janis, even though I worked for her record company for awhile, but my friends & I actually left the NYC Randall's Island Pop Festival in July 1970 at about 3:00 a.m.--just before Jimi came on-- 'cause we'd been there for something like 12 hours & besides, we'd have plenty of other chances to see him, wouldn't we....?

Oh yeah--did I mention Ten Years After? Mountain?

Jimi was to come to Pgh in the fall of '70. I can still remember how excited I was (freshman in college and waiting for tickets to go on sell).

Did you see, or miss Ten Years After and Mountain? My husband saw them in Philly. I've never seen them, but Alvin Lee is one of my top 5 guitarists :-)

One of those deals where I read the Tempo section of the Tribune and promptly discovered they had played in town last night.

I've heard that they're mind-blowing in person.

The only (non-classical) concert I've been to was a Smashing Pumpkins concert a few years ago. It was awesome, besides the music, the whole atmosphere was great.

Edited on Sat May-22-04 03:52 PM by manco
Seen the Dead 24 times, Phish 10 (just saw them three times in a row in Vegas last month--what a blast!)

Here's a partial list, some of which I'm quite embarassed to admit I've seen:

Aerosmith
Motley Crue
Stryper (yikes!)
Metallica (three times--never again...they suck)
Bob Dylan
Guns 'n' Roses (perhaps the worst live band ever)
The Black Crowes (they were fun)
HORDE Tour (Blues Traveler, Rusted Root, Lenny Kravitz, and others--lots of fun)
The Allman Brothers (post-Warren Haynes)
Santana (just days after Jerry Garcia died...sad experience)
Pink Floyd (at Yankee Stadium in 1994--w/o Roger Waters, it just isn't the same band...had fun nonetheless)
Dave Matthews
David Lee Roth (Skyscraper tour, so he wasn't much of a loser then)
U2 (Zoo TV--not a good show)
KISS (my first and second concerts ever--no makeup--and yes, they sucked)
Steve Miller Band
Ray Charles

I've also seen various jazz guys (Brad Mehldau, Roy Hargrove, David Murray) and the LA Philharmonic several times--do they count?

52. I don't know if I can remember them all...

Here are few that stick out in my mind, not in any order except the first one...

Shawn Cassidy (not my idea)
.38 Special
Stevey Ray Vaughn
Ted Nugent (not my idea either)
Crosby Stills & Nash
Bob Dylan
Steve Earle
The Bangles
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Quiet Riot
Steve Miller Band
James Taylor
Jackson Browne
ZZ Top
Alabama
The Everly Brothers
Sawyer Brown
Hank Williams, Jr.
The Dixe Chicks (before anyone knew who they were)

Several of those were multiple.

Ton Loc and Vanilla Ice -- Now these last two were interesting. This was after they were well known. They were touring small bars and the owner of a local club in a small college town where I grew up managed to get them to come. They worked cheap, IOW. The owner was a friend, and I just sat behind the bar with him. It was weird to watch.

This was after Vanilla Ice attempted transition into a bad boy thrash metal singer. If you can imagine, he was even worse than he was for 'Ice, Ice, Baby.' Ton Loc was just Ton Loc. He was pretty cool as a person, though. He hung around a little after his show and just chatted.

79. great list
always wanted to see Concrete Blonde. I love Johnnette's voice. I remember reading that Roseanne Cash loved her voice as well. Thought that was a real complement. Also forgot Lucinda from my list- really great show.

82. Thanks! I love Johnette too.
And amazingly, I completely forgot Neil Young and Peter Gabriel last summer!

Peter Gabriel was such a breath of fresh air-- I think every liberal in the DFW area came out of the woodwork. I felt comfortable in public for the first time in months, not "surrounded by the enemy" as I had been.

That helped me to begin showing up to rallies and protests. The rest is history!

Yes, Chicago, McCartney, Beach Boys, Elton John, Jethro Tull, Al Stewart, Pink Floyd, KD Lang, Blue Rodeo, Nazareth, Johnny Winter, others that are just a drug-induced blur. Then there ws the time my mother INSISTED that I "escort" her and some of her friends to an Engleburt Humperdink concert. She wasn't clear why, but I went. I've always suspected it was to prevent them throwing things on stage. I'm sure I was the only teen age guy in the audience, all the other men had an "I'm here with with wife" look. MY father refused outright.

But your husband should really catch them, they are great onstage and thier fanbase is ubelievably enthusiastic. To think, I'd never seen someone bring a 30 foot high banner bearing a bands name to a concert before then. :)

96. "Weird Al" Yankovic
"Poodle Hat" Tour 2004, Chester Fritz Auditorium, Grand Forks, North Dakota, April 20.

An impressive multimedia collage featuring with various video clips from his being mentioned on TV shows, guest appearances, and his own TV and film projects (Including every one of his "Interviews" from the most recent ALTV). Expect lots of costume changes and various jabs at the concert format itself.
