1. Where are you?
Part of that depends on your climate. Here the hostas are great for shade. I hope other people have good suggestions because I am always looking for additions to my landscaping.

3. Western PA
guess that does makes a difference... :) I have an odd little microclimate up on a big hill and all my stuff near the house tends to bloom earlier than in the city... I live outside Pittsburgh. Also I have a wisteria that is already done... My Jackmanii clematis is in pretty full flower and the Irises are pretty much on schedule. We are having more southern -style weather (not sure what zone this is like) with 80's temps, humidity and July-type weather in Mid May which is quite unusual here, becuase typically I don't put out many annuals til Mem Day since there could still be frost at night! Not this year, though! I think we are zone 6. :hi:

2. What kind of soil and watering capabilities you have are important.
And whether you want annuals or perennials. I get both. And, also, how much time you want to spend on them.
Your extension service should have good information and a quality nursery will, as well. The big box stores that have garden centers are less reliable. I'm always asking the nursery people questions.

Good luck. :D

4. Growing area
Edited on Sat May-22-04 01:30 PM by supernova
The country is divided into growing regions. Get plants that suit your growing region. Plants that do well in the South might not last the winter in the north. The nursery should have a map telling you want region you are in, therefore what kinds of plants are good for your area.

Then consider shade/not, watering much/not, type of soil, asthetics.

5. I have some shade rooms
some very sunny parts, zone 6, but very hot here already. So things are not typical for us here. I am really into vines lately.

6. Hydrangeas are great for shade

Graham Thomas is an EXCELLENT yellow rose with a delicious smell. It reblooms freely all season. Have fun and experiment with something new!

For vines, if you can find it, Akebia Quintata is top notch. Common name "chocolate vine", it grows in sun or shade, is nearly evergreen (here in Mississippi) and blooms tiny brown flowers in early spring. It smell faintly of white chocolate.

Cross vine is excellent too, and much easier to find.

8. ah thanks!
I love vines. I was drooling over a few at the nurseries. I just need to decide where to put them. I did buy some Cardinalis seeds, they attract hummingbirds - I was able to grow them easily one year.

9. They are great! I grow them around the post mu hummingbird feeder
hangs from and its a double-draw. Moon flower is another lovely vine, easy to grow from seed, that has been around since Victorian times. The huge, white blossoms always open at dusk which is really neat.

11. Oh, God, don't get me started....We have great soil and a semi-tropical
climate. I've got ever thing under the sun blooming. My 30 roses just finishing up, lots of foxglove and hollyhocks, poppies, Queen Anne's lace, yarrow, day lilies, irises, salvias, lantanas, cactus, zinnias, cleome, greenhouse flowers and quite a few vegetable tomatoes and peppers.

Its what I do in place of raising kids!
