Why would the word INEDIBLE be stenciled on a trash can?

Seriously! As I was exiting the grocery store just now, I saw a plastic trash can on the side of which was stenciled:

Western Mass. Recycling
INEDIBLE

Inedible??? :wtf:

1. Maybe that's were the store

dumps 'inedible' (read: out of date, stale, spoiled, etc) food.

edit: Lots of people go dumpster-diving and if you eat something bad, you could sue the store.

I agree though, it does sound a bit silly.

4. For the homeless and hungry.
Isn't life grand in Bush's America? I know I think so.

5. It is real responsible on the part of the store. lots of dumpster diving..
whether it was done as a common sense humanitarian concern or for legal concerns, the effect is a good one, I hope....

6. Definition and pontification:
http://www.britannica.com/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=indelible

1 a : that cannot be removed, washed away, or erased b : making marks that cannot easily be removed <an indelible pencil>
2 a : LASTING <indelible memories> b : UNFORGETTABLE, MEMORABLE <an indelible performance>

I'd say nobody's ever removed the trash so somebody tried to be funny. :D

8. Do you have dyslexia?
I'm not being rude

The word in the heading was "Inedible" - meaning not for human consumption

Your word is "Indelible" - permanent, as in indelible ink.

9. For the same reason they put stupid warnings on almost everthing...
Like "do not use this hairdrier while sitting in the bathtub" "Be sure the side stand is retracted before starting off on this motorcycle" (that was before the switch that would kill your engine if the stand was down)

Why? Well, it's that time of year, check at your local Law School and see how many shiney new (hungry, with huge loans to pay off) JD's they've unleashed on the unsuspecting public...

I sure hope that when the distribution gets to 1 lawyer for every other person in this country that somebody takes TWO, so I don't have to be forced to hire one...

10. Probably CYA against dumpster diving
and done entirely for defense against lawsuits, but at least it's better than stores that deliberately contaminate thrown-out food to make trashpicking impossible...
