stupid lawn mower question..
I recently bought one of these manual push mowers. I'm pretty happy with the performance of it, ease of use, and i don't have to get gas in a stinky ass gas can and put it in my trunk every month.

the problem i'm having is that the longer blades of weeds and stuff bend over and the mower just goes over the top of them without cutting it. i have a fair amount of these weeds in my lawn, and want to know if there's something i'm doing wrong or whatever. i really dont' want to use any kind of weed killer, and i know these types of lawn mowers were used for years and years decades ago. i'm assuming there is a way around this. i've lowered the blade to no avail. when it was high it did the same thing..

what gives?

i have something similar to these.

any help would be appreciated.

1. back and forth, back and forth over the tall weeds
you'll get them on the rebound. That's the best type of reel mower for the lawn. You just have to stand in one place an extra moment and pull the mower back to you.

2. it has a one-way mechanism though.
that's what sucks. it only spins when you push it forward.

3. Its too high.
I have one of those too. You have to cut it often to avoid this problem. Maybe use a gas mower to get it low and then start using the manual one.

4. Get a (is Billy Bob in the house?) slingblade.
Go over the yard before you mow to get the big stuff.

5. We had that problem too
Dandelions were a big problem. I guess just mow often and sharpen the blades. I liked my manual mower when we lived at our old place. Our lawn now is too thick to be able to use our manual easily. I recommend them though for anyone who doesn't have thick carpetlike grass though.

7. I use a horse
seriously, but in the last few years we planted some trees and have a bunch more container plants in the yard. One bite can ruin most of these so not sure what to do now - maybe a push mowere is a good idea. Is there anything similar (manual) in the way of edgers - like a hand cranked weed eater?

8. Get it sharpened.
If it was new, it should have been sharp, but it doesn't sound like it is. I don't have that problem with my old Craftsman.
