3. Or Paris
but friends are saying it is getting a bit fascist too. Of course they don't realize how fascist the U$ is compared to France. I have always considered Chirac a bloody fascist and he is.
Wilderness would be nice, like Merlin's cave in the Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart. But Bu$h and Co. have screwed the wilderness as well.

4. It doesn't matter
As long as Haagen-Dazs, Marlboros and Dewar's are available in the area, I don't care.

Heh. ;)

5. Burlington, Vermont for me . . .
not exactly a big metropolitan area, but my choice nonetheless . . . small city, great college town, and I have a lot of relatives up there . . . spent time there as a kid and loved it . . .

14. Oh, there's a big difference between LA and SD!
Less pollution in SD; traffic doesn't seem as crazy; generally SD area is much more beautiful (IMO).

16. Trust me - you DON'T want to live in Miami.
I just finished living there for 3.5 years. The people are the pits there. It's noisy and too hot, even in winter, and the traffic is a nightmare. The only good things are no smog and fantastic beaches.

23. I 2nd that!
South FloriDUH blows! And I can say that cuz I'm a NATIVE of this HELLHOLE! Other than Neil Rogers and Randi Rhodes, I would not only have taken a sledgehammer to my radios, but I would have lost what little bit of SANITY I have!!!!!!! I've been to just about every corner of this country, and I swear to hellfire, I have NEVER encountered NASTIER people than some of the trolls who infest my home turf.

And this fruckin humity SUCKS! In Death Valley, I was out there about 20 years ago, and it was NICE! Then the park ranger runs, I'm not kidding, RUNS, over to me and my family and he is TOTALLY freaked out! "Are you folks ok?" "Yeah." "You...you are?" "Yeah!" "It's 115 DEGRESS OUT HERE!" "It is?" "Y'all aren't from around here are you?" "Nope, we're from South Florida." "OH NO WONDER! Sorry to bother you!!!!!!!!" True story...it felt like it was 70 DEGRESS! And it was friggin 115!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm living on the WRONG DAMN COAST!!!!

Lu Cifer, GET ME OUTTA HERE!!!!!!!!!!! DRY CLIMATE AHOY!!!!!!!! And I don't care if it's a goddamn desert!!!!!!!!!

If I end up moving back, at least I'll stay here in Florida long enough to cast my vote.

18. "I Can't Afford it"
I recently moved to SF, got a decent deal on a 2 bedroom apt. (it took some shopping around) But it does strike me as funnny when peopl say "I'd like to live in XXX, but I can't afford it." My brother said the same thing about San Francisco, and he makes DOUBLE what I make living in El Paso. For many people, it's not a matter of being unable to afford it, it's a matter of being uwilling to make the lifestyle tradeoffs it would require. Sure, he couldn't have a 2,000 sq. foot house with a big yard (that he never uses) for only $70k like in El Paso, but he could AFFORD it. There are many people gettting by on much less even in the expensive cities.

I feel that the cultural environment and education my kids will get here make it worth the sacrifice in square footage.

At the local jr. high school, the kids have all done posters and essays on tolerance, on why smoking SUCKS (and they name the brands even) There are posters teaching tolerance for kids whose parents are GLBT, etc.

Somehow I doubt the social environment would be so positive elsewhere, Even in El Paso, which is a relatively nice, non wingnut town...

21. I love a lot of things about Chicago.
But I live in Ohio and the winters here are starting to really wear on me, at my age (and I ain't getting younger). I can't imagine what wintering in Chicago would be like. And it's expensive to live there, too -- not as bad as the coasts, but much higher cost of living than we have here. Still, if the Mr. got a good offer up there, we probably wouldn't deliberate about it very long.
