A question about bad parents
I grew up in a very nice and safe home. I have a questions for those who did not.

How did you find out that one or both of your parents were not up to the parenting role? I mean when young every child almost automatically thinks that their folks are great. Did an adult take you aside and say "Kid, don't listen to dad/mom?" Or did you figure it out yourself?

1. I figured it out when I was 5 years old
after about the 10th time my father whipped me with a belt so bad it drew blood on my ass.

My mom came to me one day and asked me whether I would prefer that we live with my dad or without him (this was in 1958). I told her that I would prefer that we live with him because I was scared that if he found out that I said I didn't want to live with him he would beat me.

2. you just figure it out.
sometimes it takes a while. I find it absolutely amazing how much hell and terror you can get used to as a child. You just simply think that is how it's supposed to be.

i'm 33, and my parents are still the same, just divorced.

3. You figure it out.
And you either survive your childhood with the mantra of "when I'm 18 I'm outta here..." or you don't.
