Jump the shark?
I was reading an article at Smirking Chimp and the writer said Bush had jumped the shark, or something like that. What does that mean?

2. It refers to an episode of Happy Days
when Fonzie rode his motorcycle over a shark tank. It was deemed to be the beginning of the end of the show.

The term's been extrapolated to mean that moment at which you realize something formerly good now sucks.

12. In that case, Bush* can never jump the shark
that moment at which you realize something formerly good now sucks

Bush* was never, ever good. Therefore, he is incapable of jumping the shark. Q.E.D.

3. It's a website

You vote to see when a TV show specifically went downhill.

4. Refers to the scene in Happy Days when Fonzie jumped a shark...
...on waterskis.

It indicates the moment when you realize that the writers of a television show have run out of ideas.

Ted McGinley making a guest appearance is also such a sign.

5. It's a reference to the TV show Happy Days
In which Fonzie "jumped the shark". Entertainment critics say that the show was all down hill from that point on.

7. It means the moment when something goes to hell
It was coined not so far long ago about TV shows, referencing the Happy Days episode when Fonzie jumped his cycle over a shark tank. That was the moment we knew that Happy Days was done as a creative show.

usually "jump the shark" is used in reference to TV (such as when "Cosby", and many other shows, add a young girl-child to the cast), but its gaining in wider popularity.

8. Oh!
Thanks for spelling it out for me. I figured it couldn't be good, but I couldn't figure out where the expression came from. I never would have guessed it had to do with Fonzie, so thanks.

11. It doesn't apply to Smirky (for me) because the Bush act was never any
good so it couldn't turn bad.
