The crux of the biscuit is the APOSTROPHE
Plural noun = yaks, as in "I sure miss all those threads about yaks in the Lounge."

Possessive noun = yak's, as in "ZombyWoof is an asshole, but he thinks he is the yak's pajamas."

Your = as in "Your asscrack is showing, matcom."

You're = you are, as in "You're a real threadjacking pro, GOPisEvil."

Its = as in "That yak has its fur caught in the refrigerator door again."

It's = it is, as in "It's the yak's mess, he should clean it up so the other yaks don't step in it."

Master the apostrophe, people. It isn't that hard.

I have other peeves, but this will do for a few minutes or so.

Seriously, how do you get past the fifth grade and NOT reatin the information re: punctuation and spelling which you outlined above? It's like people are PURPOSEFULLY not retaining valuable information. What are they replacing it with, sports statistics? Zappa trivia?

6. try this
After you type your sentence, read it back saying "it is" in place of "its" or "it's", and if it makes sense, it keeps the apostrophe. :-)

12. let's add one more
Whose = as in, "Whose yaks keep pooping on my lawn?"

Who's = who is, as in "I don't know who's worse, Morrissey or Andrew Lloyd Webber. A pox on both of them for all time."

23. It sounds like
you need to visit the Kingdom of Anglophonia, found posted in the meeting room.

Here's a snip:

Eat Kids!
(Or, the issue of the disappearing comma of direct address. This section is the contribution of the Queen of Anglophonia, whom this error upsets exceedingly.)
Pooh, you say, who cares about the comma of direct address anymore? Who even cares what it is (or was)? Everyone knows what is meant by a sign reading "Go team!" or "Happy Birthday Mom!" True. But a missing comma of direct address could have dire consequences.

For example, in my heading, the command "Eat kids!" is telling people to devour little children. But if I write "Eat, kids!" I am telling the children to nourish themselves.

Likewise, the statements above should read "Go, team!" and "Happy Birthday, Mom!"

In the future, gentle readers, please ask the cake decorator to take an extra second and add that little dab of icing that will mark you as a literate party-giver. Your more educated guests will be filled with admiration before they fill their stomachs with cake.
