What was Christopher thinking ?(another Sopranos question)
After Christopher almost strangled Ade (I thought sure she would die right there and then), he left to get some air, and buy cigarettes, or so he said. The following scene had him watching a youngish man and presumably the guy's pregnant wife and two or three kids pile into the car after visiting a quick food market. Christopher just stood and stared at them. Next thing we saw, Tony S was calling Ade regarding the phony Christopher/suicide attempt call and setting up the Sylvio pick-up of Ade.
I didn't know anything was awry until I realized that Syl was not even noticing Ade's messed-up face.

Anyone have any insight into the Christopher scene at the quick market place?

I didn't catch onto Shakespeare right away either.

Thanks for your insights.

1. Chris was looking at that guy and his family and thinking
"he's got what I want and won't have" because he knew Ade would soon be dead.

Ade had only one chance -- immediately after being contacted by the FBI, tell Chris. Once she failed to do that she was a walking corpse.

3. I thought that, but it didn't quite make sense
...because the couple looked individually like total losers, know what I mean? The man in particular looked like he would have rather been anywhere else in the world than where he was, as he got in on the driver's side. And the woman was hardly what one would call attractive. So I couldn't figure out why that particular family would make him think this is what he - Christopher - would be missing. In fact, I suspect that he saw this rather unfortunate example of a family as perhaps a reason or justification as to why he never wanted that in the first place and could therefore call in the hit on Ade.

The more I think about it, and I think about it more than I should I am sure, I am certain that that particular family was a turnoff to Christopher at that moment.

8. NO!!!
He actually considered her offer...he was still pondering it when he saw the shaggy dude getting into the crappy car with the rugrats...he looked at his $50,000 hummer..given to him by the life he was considering giving up...looking at the guy in the car...he realized that he didn't want to end up like that, and wasn't ready to "settle down" into that lifestyle off in middle America...so he then made the call to Tony.

10. Obviously you didn't see him slide his hand over his Hummer
He was thinking quite the opposite. He loved the mob lifestyle and the money involved. He didn't turn because he didn't want to be some ordinary poor shlub. It couldn't have been more obvious.

2. I noticed that before they showed that poor family
...they showed Christopher sort of admiring his (or someone's) Hummer while filling it up. Then he saw the man with his wife and several kids getting into their old car with, presumably, most of their possessions in Hefty bags tied to the roof. As soon as we saw the look on his face, my boyfriend and I looked at each other and said, "She's dead." My take is that Christopher was thinking about Adriana's suggestion they go into witness protection, never to return to their old life, and seeing that family pointed out to him the contrast between his current life and what he might have to look forward to if he had to make an honest living. Apparently it was more than he could take.

5. Bingo!
That was exactly what I thought, that he saw the poor family as a vision of his future if he talked to the FBI.

6. yes exactly
he didn't want to be "that guy" he saw in the car.

He didn't kill Adriana when he was choking her, had to go think, and seeing that family, and especially the guy, just reinforced what he was already thinking.

For me, I thought Adriana was going to jump out of the car when Sil was driving her off the highway and they did that POV shot of the woods, and you realized that SHE KNEW what was going to happen.

Then later I thought why didn't she pull out her cell phone and call the FBI chick to come get her?

She had nothing to lose at that point.

18. The minute Silvio turned off the main road
I knew that Adriana was doomed. The way the fake hospital call was handled, I could almost hope that Chris had actually attempted suicide, unable to handle the choice between following his fiancee and staying with the Mafia. Either way, Adriana was unable to take the FBI offer.

If you've watched previous years, you know that Chris dabbled in writing and the movie biz before deciding to take the Mafia blood oath. He is close enough to Tony that he knows that his defection would be considered a supreme betrayal and that even the Witness Protection Program wouldn't guarantee his safety.

At one point in the last episode, he referred to Tony as "the man I'm going to go to hell for."

4. I think he saw himself as a common shlub
if he entered witness protection

crummy car vs The Hummer he currently drives

common wife vs hot babes he usually bags

burdoned with a choice vs being free

He wouldnt have any of that if he left "the family", he is a very weak person!

poor but honest living.

I wonder if he will now be Tony's #1 guy? Tony must realize that Christopher gave up a lot, will he see this as proof of Christopher's dedication? Or will he be leery of Christopher because he was able to kill his future wife? I don't think that Tony would ever be able to kill Carmella but then again what do I know, I only started watching the show at the end of last season.

I'm guessing that Christopher will be completely drugged out in the last episode, I hope that Tony actually tries to comfort him, instead of just slapping him around again.

11. Chrissy will slide back into heroin addiction
And he'll be whacked either at the end of this season or next. It's bound to happen, and almost did at one point this season.

17. Tony would kill Carmella at the drop of a hat
Tony would kill his kids if they got in his way. Hell, he offered to kill his own cousin in the last episode.

13. Damn
I can't ever resist a spoiler. I don't have HBO, so we only get to see The Sopranos when the seasons come out on dvd. But I knew Ade was a goner when she showed up on the commercial for the new Friends spin-off. My husband said, "Hey, it's Adrianna!", then we looked at each other and said, "Uh-oh... ." :wow:

14. the whole theme for the series
Is that the mafia life is one that once you get into, you both cannot leave and you cannot bring yourself to try to.

Carmella could have divorced Tony, but she chose her comfortable lifestyle over independence.

Christopher could have done the same thing.

So could Tony B.
