Grrr.....I hate it when people act so elitist.
I just lost my temper in another thread because someone accused me of selling my soul because I work for a company that provides technical support for Microsoft products.

I guess I was caught off guard by the idea that working hard, paying my taxes, volunteering my time was all secondary to the notion that some people don't like the company I work for.

I am not a big fan of Microsoft myself, but it pays the bills and IT jobs aren't so plentiful that one can be picky about who to work for. Plus my job is being outsourced to India in a few weeks (guess I'll get my soul back :eyes: ).

I just wish people would think before they make nasty comments to one another.

19. I didn't see the light...I saw my layoff notice....
Maybe that's why I am a bit on edge. I have 21 working days until I am unemployed because of overseas outsourcing.

I don't mind people bashing Microsoft. Hell, I bash Microsoft products (when they deserve it, which is fairly often from my viewpoint), but there is no reason to insult hard working people who do the best job they can.

3. misplaced ideas/visions of purity...
if you do an honest job well you have nothing to be ashamed of...and the fact your job involves microsoft isn't a big deal...
most of us have jobs where we use some microsoft products...that supports Bill G also..

4. What?
You could use that excuse to work for Haliburton! Rationalising is fine but no one should be expected to give you a pass. The stuff you do outside work has nothing to do with the work you do. As for souls, they are undervalued at the moment. Every single republican has theirs double mortgaged.

I'm being outsourced to India too. Good luck.

8. It's still wrong.....
Yeah, my company contracted to provided technical support for Microsoft a few years back and we did our best to provide help to people that were screwed by flaws in Microsoft's software and just plain user ignorance and bad luck. Blaming someone on the bottom of a company for the decisions CEOs make in a boardroom is elitist and wrong.

It's been 9 months since my team and I were replaced by offshore workers. Oh well, at least we were offerred a severance package on the condition that we train our replacements.

6. and the people making these judgements work where?
the reality is that the way this society is set up it is virtually impossible to survive without a certain degree of compromising of principles--not unless you want to build a hut in a forest (with already dead limbs of course) and eat berries.

10. Exactly.....
There are few jobs you can work where some CEO doesn't do something that rails against your value system. Some are important and others are less so. I spent the last 5 1/2 years helping people fix their computers and providing a good service to people who needed it and to be insulted for doing that because they don't like the company that makes the software I support just rubbed me the wrong way.

13. How shocking!
You should quit your job and live in a cardboard box instead. (Of course I am joking, but that's about par for the attitude from some people.)

Anyone who provides accessible, accurate, easy-to-understand, non-condescending information to the public about ANYTHING - be it Microsoft's flaws or arcane laws - is doing Good Work and does not deserve Any. Flaming. What. So. Ever.

This I believe.

17. I don't have a problem with this....
I think most people are going to be hard pressed to find a job that either directly or indirectly acts against your value system in one form or another.

If working for Microsoft technical support makes me a souless person, I wonder what serving my country by working on weapons guidance systems made me?

21. I understand, I have asked people whether my husband should have
given up the fairly decent paying job that usually deals with automotive machining for the 6 weeks that they were working on the Stealth. And if they thought the company would have held his spot in honor of his values. Snort.

Damned if you do damned if you don't.

16. It's not elitist, it's just RUDE!
I don't know where people get the idea that they are ENTITLED to make judgements about where you work. Jebus! And the same goes for all that nonsense about how much much people spend of their OWN fucking money for something important to them. It's nobody's business!

I guess they's feel better if you were unemployed and visiting the soup line every day. Of course these people giving you a ration of horse shit are making a decent living and probably enjoying a few extras to boot.

And what the hell is wrong with working for "a company that provides technical support for Microsoft products"? I guess they only want Republicans to have jobs.

18. Ha - elitist swill
There are some things to be angered over - if you were, say, the CEO of Nike or FOX or etc. - but to be dissed becuase the company you work for provides help for microsoft?

That's just bloody immature.

Whoever flamed you on that one is a *@&^&^#$ fershlugginer armpit licker and needs to get real. I bet that flamer doesn't grow their own organic food and so is culpable for greenhouse gas emissions. Probably drive to get their food, too. Certianly is using fossile fuels or nuclear fuel for the elctrictiy to make and then deliver and then run his/her computer. So that person supports the murder of children in Iraq. Nail 'em with that one.

Cripes. Let's admonish one another if we're doing something wrong, but in your situation, a dis is absolutely uncalled for.

20. Just ignore them.
The net is full of petulant assholes and whiners that will jump into the middle of a conversation to point out that some aspect of that conversation sucks. It's par for the course for a medium that, through its anonymity, allows people to act in ways that would get their lights punched out in real life. Laugh at them and be glad you have a real job.

...usually are quite young, or they're older but their minds stopped maturing when they were about 15. Your best bet simply is to let them rant from the security of their parents' basement.

The simple fact is...if you own a home, rent, drive a car, pay a credit card bill, invest in the stock market, purchase groceries, own a phone line as everyone on DU does, pay your electric bill.....(you get the picture?) there is ZERO possibility of living with any real integrity since every company I mentioned above would like to purchase your democracy and hand you back a plutocracy...therefore...from the minute WE ALL get up in the morning until the minute we go to bed at night and even in our sleep (if we leave the refrigerator plugged in) we are working against our own interests.

Let those who live under a tree, walk, communicate via bicycle runner and dig a hole and bury their shit be the first to cast a stone. :eyes:
