What was the first play you ever saw?

For me it was Little Abner. A college production very well done.

I couldn't decide on best/favorite/most enjoyable play so I started this thread.. :shrug:

When I was 8 or 9, my parents decided it would be a good idea to take me to see a Broadway play every year for my birthday. I saw a lot of second-rate plays that way, plus a few first-rate plays that were on their fourth or fifth cast change and seemed decidedly shopworn.

I think my parents were mainly going on nostalgia, and that Broadway wasn't what it had been when they were young. They would always tell me what magic it was when the lights began to dim, but I never felt it.

The best plays I ever saw were the Shakespeare in Central Park, plus some at college. But Broadway never cut it for me.

That summer I also saw 'Annie Get Your Gun', 'West Side Story' and 'The Sound Of Music' at the local theater in the park.

11. I saw Judith Anderson's Medea on tv

I was probably in high school. My recollection is that it was broadcast directly from the stage production, which in those days meant very low picture quality. It still knocked my socks off. I would love to have seen her live.

I did see Richard Burton doing Hamlet on Broadway, though -- probably the best live performance by an established star I ever saw. Oh, that man could do wonders with the English language.

but hell, I was a little kid from North Louisiana who'd just moved to the big city (Houston). I bless my mother for INSISTING that I and my brothers be exposed to some kind of culture other than "redneck".

My wife worships Burton. And you're right, GOD he could speak. I never saw him live, but sure loved his work in movies like "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf".

With Alan Alda, Victor Garber and Alfred Molina at the Doolittle Theatre at Hollywood and Vine (I think they've renamed it since). Great story.

My favorite was seeing O'Neill's "Hughie" at the Mark Taper Forum in LA with Al Pacino in '99 or so. Got $12 rush tickets for the final performance (on eBay for $250/pair that week) and was 3 feet from the tiny stage. Got a pic with Al at the backstage door before the show.

One of the more enjoyable was "Thoroughly Modern Millie" in NYC a few years back. Gonna try to see it again now that it's in LA for a few months.

16. I think it was HMS Pinafore

I know I was really young, maybe 6 or 7, and my parents took me to see a college production of Pinafore. I loved it. I wanted to be Buttercup.

I don't think we'd been to anything before that, but my parents were really great about taking us to see live theater. Most of my siblings and I ended up doing theater in high school, some in college and community theater. My older brother tried for quite some time to make it as a professional actor. It didn't work for him, but he had fun trying.
