A small fire broke out yesterday in a Lowell church after it was struck by lightning, fire officials said.
``It scared me to death . . . I knew it hit close,'' William Lawrence, who lives next door to the Assembly of Jesus Church, said after two ``big crack(s)'' of thunder made him look out his window about 2:45 p.m. ``I saw smoke coming from the tower.''
Lightning had hit the top of the Lawrence Street church, igniting a small fire in the steeple, Lowell Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Christoun said.
Firefighters were able to put out the blaze in minutes, limiting the damage, Christoun said.
The incident was one of a series of lightning strikes reported as thunderstorms swept through the region.
