Poll question: Corporal Punishment Poll
Edited on Tue May-25-04 01:58 PM by Delano
What do you favor in the home (not in school, etc.)?

I used to believe in the "occasional spanking for very bad behavior" thing, but at some point it occurred to me that the kids are individual people, and that I have no more right to hit them than anybody else. I'm still somewhat strict, but will never strike one of my kids again...

For the record, I think some forms of scolding can be worse than spanking...

Dumbya for one, and then there's "man's other best friend"...

6. Under no circumstances.... I considered choosing the "slap" one but...
...if you wouldn't do it to an adult, why would you do it to a child? As one who experienced multiple forms of corporal punishment myself as a child, I can tell you that it is an incredibly destructive practice, and takes years to overcome. Don't do it! Count to ten.

8. I would slap an adult on the hand...
...if they were going to put their hand in a socket or a moving disposal. Without hesitation. Of course, that's more about getting someone's attention than punishing them.

9. You have a point there.
I agree with the light socket... but I've seen parents slap their kids' hands when they reach for a candy bar in the supermarket. That's unnecessary.

7. in principle
i think that spanking is unacceptable. but i also know that in the real world it is hard to be the grown up at all times. there is a unique pressure on parents to be responsible for their kids behavior. i don't think that parents should beat themselves up for a weak moment here and there.
it's hard to be a parent.

10. It depends on the child!
Some don't respond to spanking. Some will respond to nothing else. Speaking from personal experience here, you have go with whatever is most effective for the child being disciplined.

It's a mistake to try to figure out some universal standard that will work for everyone.
