Arkansas family celebrates 15th child

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Michelle Duggar is all smiles after delivering her 15th child, but she may be ready for more, her family says.

Mother and child were doing well, although Michelle, 37, was feeling some discomfort because the birth was her second by Caesarean section, said her mother-in-law, Mary Duggar.

"She's a trouper. She's just all smiles," Mary Duggar said.

Jackson Levi Duggar was born at 10:52 a.m. Sunday, weighing 7 pounds 8 ounces and measuring 20 inches.

Birthrates in some western societies and amongst some cultural groups are below replacement levels. Due to economics, changes in womens role in society, etc.

And call me a bigot, but I see absolutely NO reason, none, zip, zilch, to have a dozen kids. Why? You don't need all that "free help" on the farm anymore. I don't get it. If somebody could give me an explanation other than "Why not?", I'd be willing to listen.

I love being from a large family, and sometimes feel sorry for people who aren't. I know I have an amazing safety net because of my family, a net that not a lot of people have.

That said, I also believe that in this day and age of environmental destruction and over-population, it IS irresponsible to be popping out so many children.

Also feel bad because surely this is a real fundy Christian family, and THAT the kids don't deserve. I don't know how people etner into society when they've been brought up to believe taht therepublican party and Christianity are one and the same, and that science is evil.

My grandmother was from a family of 17. My other grandmother came from a family of 2, but her mother had a hysterectomy at an early age.

which I find to be so cutesy I want to :puke: whenever peple do that, I don't have a problem with a large family nor do I find it digusting. I also think it's cool they're building their own house.

obviously not everyone can do this because it would kill the earth, but, you know, what the hell. My dad's from a family of 16, and mom with 7, and I LOVE being part of such a huge family. I have 62 cousins in my generation! That's cool! And that's not counting the spouses!

My only rel poblem with this is that given the size of the family, the location, and the fact that they homeschool, I suggest there's a 99% chance they're a freaky fundy family making sure that their children don't learn any science other than what the Bible teaches and they're surely growing up extremist rightwing republicans. Maybe not, but as against gambling that I am, I WOULD wager money on that one.

I find it irresponsible for people to have so many children. I don't care whether they can afford them (as the Duggers clearly can) or not. An American child consumes more of the world's resources than any other human on the planet. This family now has 15 children.

I suspect that if the family was not so aryan and well off, SOME people in this country would be singing a different tune about a 37 year old woman giving birth to her 15th child.

People may wax poetic about how wonderful it is to have oodles of siblings but I did not find it a joy. There was intense competition for my mom's very limited time. She had seven kids in a ten year period and as a result, like Mrs Dugger, she barely had time to enjoy each child's infancy and toddlerhood.

Even though my now deceased younger brother and I never had children my mom STILL has 15 grandchildren.

We definitely do not need more humans on the planet.

Really, there is something wrong with thinking about the sixteenth when you just birthed the fifteenth.

The brood was on TV this morning. She sounded a bit out of it, but was probably medicated; this was her second Caesarean. Maybe she should slow down a bit....

And as long as the husband isn't forcing his wife to keep getting pregnant, I don't see any harm.

Good Catholic family with 13 or 14 kids. Mom and one of the older kids were gone, leaving dad with the rest. Well, he "forgot" the youngest in the van on a summer day in N. VA. The poor kid died in that van. Apparently, it had not been the first time, they forget or left a kid somewhere. I think it would be incredibly impossible to divide your love and attention between so many kids.

The thought of 15 goes beyond insanity inducing. And I love children. My two young boys are the joy of my life. But, they are a lot of work, physically, mentally and emotionally.
