I Haven't Watched ONE Episode Of American Idol
not looking for flames but the entire concept seemed idiotic to me from the start.

is it really good? MUST be cause CNN considers it a 'Top News Story' every FRIGGEN morning! :eyes:

Soladad O'Bush tells me MILLIONS are watching and voting (which aparently works about as smoothly as Florida 2000)

What the HELL is so important (or good) about this show, its format or its appeal?

should i buy TIVO and join my fellow 'informed' 'Muricans?

I don't watch any of those ridiculous "reality" shows. They all suck as far as I'm concerned.

It just doesn't matter to me. I'll stick with movies and documentaries with the occasional Tech TV thrown in.

6. Who cares if you haven't seen it?
I agree that sometimes it's a bit inane, but it's a good format, and it's interesting to see how young singers react when thrown onto a world stage like this. If you don't like it, don't watch it.... does it really matter?

If I'm going to watch idiots pull stunts I'd rather sit through "Jackass."

Edit: Oops, I was thinking about "Fear Factor," another show I'll never see, but same applies anyway.

and I'll raise you....I've never seen Friends, Survivor, The Mole, The Swan, Who wants to blow a Millionaire, Fear Factor, and I'm sure I missed some more "reality" shows that are not on the list.

There is one reality show that I loved, that was Joe Schmoe. That dude was hilarious.

14. I'll confess - I watched it once
It was when Ramsey, GOPisEvil and I were in DC for the March. Ramsey & GOP went out to dinner, but I wasn't really feeling that hungry and decided to stay back in the room to catch a few winks. The TV was on and I was watching a rerun of the Simpsons on FOX and I guess I feel asleep. I woke up in the middle of American Idol.

Like a train wreck (and the fact that I couldn't find the remote control plus I was too lazy to get off the bed to find it) I watched what the big deal was.

I can say that was my first, last and only time I've ever watched the show. I'd rather watch my cat take a dump that view that piece of crap!

17. I watch it....do you watch sports?
I enjoy American Idol and I watch it for the same reasons I watch the finals of the NBA. I prefer college sports ( football and basketball) but I watch the Super Bowl and the NBA playoffs because I want to see what is going on in American pop culture.

I enjoy mindless entertainment. There is only so much serious stuff one can take. Getting away from DU and the news of the world is good for ones mental health.

AI is a worthless competition that has little impact on the world....just like bowl games, the Stanley cup, Wimbelton, etc.
It's still fun to watch however.

watched one time to see what the fuss was. One time and one time only for me. I found I couldn't turn off the brain and it cut into my beer drinking time.

My suggestion--don't buy TIVO for that. Wait for football season.

22. I watched it for the first time this year
The appeal is waiting for people to sing really badly and get abused by Simon (the British judge).

Then you can laugh at them as they cry because they really believed they were going to be famous.

Watching someone's spirit get crushed can be so much fun, you should start watching next year.

I have not watched a nano-second of this swill, or any other "reality" show.

Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour, with a snotty judge.

I'd rather watch the Gong Show reruns.

Note to Soledad: Millions of Americans are idiots. Check the 2000 election results.

24. I watch it with Mrs. Ready4Change.
It's like watching trains pass by with a bunch of friends. You're hoping to either see one go really really fast, or wreck. You debate amongst yourselves about which was faster, and somewhere there are news reports about which ones were faster and you all argue over whether the news reports were right or not.

I don't find it high entertainment, but when the rest of TV is low entertainment I'll sometimes go for the medium level, or turn it off and read a book.

29. Oh, I have watched all of them
And I have enjoyed it.

I know it is chic to denigrate any form of popular entertainment (not saying that you are doing this, Matcom), but this show is quite entertaining.

What we normally get from pop music is created "stars" like Brittney or the other one name wonders. AI is an interesting twist. They go around the country encouraging regular people to audition, then take the best to Hollywood to perform. There are some very talented individuals who would never have the chance to get into the business without this opportunity.

The probable winner - Fantasia Barrino - is very good. Her rendition of "Summertime" gives me chills whenever I hear it. She has had some dud performances, but for the most part she is very good. I think the best singer was voted off, but hey, it's all part of the show.

Yes, there are cheesy aspects to it like the host, but it can be enjoyable.

Not all "reality" based shows are bad. Survivor is fun to watch (even though this last series was terrible). One of the best out there is The Amazing Race. One can learn a great deal about geography by watching this show.

Again, I know it is the cool thing to bash these shows, but they are not evil. They are simply entertainment.

Relax...watch it...have fun.

"American Idol" is not ALL bad, although I tuned out on it this year when most of the good singers got voted off. I stopped watching when George Huff was let go. He had a great voice. Strong and smokey. I'll probably get flamed for this but I have to say it: It seems like people around here like to brag that they have never seen the show and never will. I see one post after another saying that. It's strange because so many people say this and then say that they don't "get" the show or don't know what the fuss is about. I don't understand how so many people who haven't seen it can be so down on it. It's not the best thing on TV and other seasons have been better than this one, but for the love of God it's just a singing contest and believe it or not the show actually gets some damned good singers. There are some things about the show that I don't like. The obnoxious and overrated Simon Cowell immediately comes to mind and if I have to hear Randy Jackson say, "Whattup, Dawg" one more time I'll take a flamethrower to him, but I don't really watch the show for them I watch it because in most seasons there are at least 3 or 4 amazing singers and it's fun rooting for them just like it's fun rooting for your favorite sports team. I'm sure you all can relate to the fun of rooting for someone, can't you?

I don't watch any reality shows because I'm hoping my not watching will start a trend (so far it isn't working.) I saw the first "Survivor" and "Temptation Island", and that was enough for me. I can't stand the thought of "Fear Factor" and "The Bachelor/Bachelorette". Americans' tastes should be better than that.

35. American Idol is not a reality show...
Otherwise, you'd see them all living together and 24/7 film of them. It's a talent contest. That's all.

reality tv is anything but reality. People who get stranded on islands and survive longer than their compatriots usually don't end up winning a million dollars.
