Please help me solve this alphabetization problem....

Please help me solve this alphabetization problem....

Which is in correct alphabetical order

1. Maier, Mason, MacAnally, McDougal
2. Skowrunski, Stillman, St. James, St. John, Strong
3. Sainez, Saint Arnaud, Saint Charles, Saint Claire
4. McBride, McBrian, McBroom, Mccabe, MacDonald
5. None of them

I don't know how to treat the Saints and the St. - anyone know? I believe they go to the front...but is that true for both St. and Saint (when it's spelled out)

6. Alphabetizing can be tricky.
#1 is wrong. MacAnally, Maier, Mason, McDougal is correct.

#2 and #3 are correct.

#4 is wrong. Mac comes before Mc, so it should be MacDonald, then McBride, McBrian, McBroom and McCabe.

Sometimes the Mc's and Mac's are all put together separately, often at the beginning of the M's. Otherwise you go crazy in a large file of names trying to find the last name Mack or something else that's not a McSomething or MacSomething.

Some alphabetizing systems treat St as if it's spelled out Saint. Personally I prefer to treat it as spelled.

7. I was taught (by nuns with rulers that knew how to use them)
that abbreviations were ALWAYS to be spelled out prior to alphabetization - including, but not limited to, the word/abbrev. Saint/St.

Preference doesn't matter - that's the RULE (*smack* w/ruler) ;-)

The rule is to spell out abbreviations before alphabetizing.

But until they are officially changed, St and Mc come before Saint and Mac. #4 is the only correct one.

And they come before anything else.
