A Trenton woman is on trial for allegedly grabbing a police officer by his testicles while resisting arrest after she was stopped for motor vehicle violations.
In addition to the aggravated assault charges she now faces, Arlene Burgess, 33, got a busted lip, broken teeth and glass in her foot when she was dragged to the police wagon after the traffic stop on Sept. 30, 2003, defense attorney Diane Lyons and her client said yesterday.
Police "sometimes make mistakes," Lyons told the jury during her opening statement. And they "rough up citizens, especially women," she added.
Officer Aaron Kelsey, of the Trenton Police Department, testified yesterday against Burgess, who was arrested after she was stopped for driving without tags and a valid registration in an area where cops were "wolf packing," or sweeping for drugs.
