Are humans:
Generally nice until they get controlled by un-nice rulers, which in turn kills their niceness?

Or are people, all of them, scum to some level and that I'm utterly naive in thinking people are generally good at heart until an external force forces them to put #1 above everybody else?

1. There's something bad in each of us
and it'll come out under different circumstances for different people.

2. I think people are at different stages of evolution.
Some are very enlightened and good, some are less enlightened or less in control of their weaknesses, and so are more easily led to "the dark side" (to put it scientifically :) ). In other words. . . I think many people have to learn to be good people. . .

3. That's a superlative point...
I wish there's a way to edify more people. The world and all who run it or destroy it all need basic lessons in humanity. :-(

4. No kidding.
I'm with ya there. Selfishness is too rewarding, greed too compelling... Aye, I do fear darkness will always be with us. . .

5. I agree.
Except that I don't think many, or any, are fully "enlightened." Just all at a different place in the journey.

7. I just use enlightened in a general way. . .
You know, like having "enlightened" attitudes towards the environment, rather than old-fashioned rape-the-land ethics...

8. Yep.
It does seem that general enlightenment is not widespread enough in the U.S. in the dawn of the 21st Century.

6. Read "Lord of the Flies"
All of us are capable of doing anything. If we are wise we don't let others run away with our emotions. This is not to say that we have to suppress our feelings but the greatest evil that people do is generally when the let the actions of others dictate their actions. Take 10 deep breaths and let the high tide of emotions ebb a bit and most will do the right thing.

9. People are nice, but often stupid as well...
