Someone's got to say it: Roger Moore, worst Bond ever...
...and that includes George Lazenby.

Sorry in advance. Connery rules, Dalton and Brosnan were consolation prizes, Moore was like Felix Unger with a gun (no disrespect intended to the late, great Tony Randall).

Please stop looking for a "new" Bond, MGM. Especially if you're still considering this guy:

Thanks in advance. If I had a choice between McGregor and Moore as Bond...and I mean Roger Moore, right now in 2004, I'd go with Moore. Or Meryl Streep. If McGregor were the LAST actor on Earth, I'd make a Bond movie in friggin' claymation, or with sock puppets, or construction paper like "South Park."

As the Human Torch would say, "flame on"...I mouthed off, I'm ready for the spanking...

3. Actually, George Lazenby played his Bond pretty close to the book
Her Majesty's Secret Service was one of the last Bond books, IIRC. I know it was supposed to be an older, burned out Bond sort of gone to seed -- maybe even slightly mad by the end of the story.

I didn't originally like Lazenby's portrayal until I'd learned more of the backstory to it. Unfortunately, I hate Telly Savalas as Blofeld. Charles Gray had Blofeld pegged, IMHO.

15. I'd always heard that...
...and since the movie came so close on the heels of the "Sean Is Gone" consciousness, he probably never got the credit he deserved for his work in that film.

The whole Diana Rigg subplot...a tough one for any actor to pull off. I don't think Connery would have done it. I can't imagine him (as Bond) getting married, losing his wife...I just don't see him wearing that role comfortably.

I agree with you on Blofeld...Savalas was basically Kojak in every role he ever played. A little to the left in one, a little to the right in the next, but always Kojak (with the possible exception of his role in "The Dirty Dozen"...still disturbing, 37 years later).

4. Dalton was unwatchable
From what I understand, Moore's portrayal of Bond was actually closer to what Fleming intended than Connery's offering.

In all fairness, Moore didn't have the best scripts to work with and had to do most of his work during the awful 70s. Bad music, bad effects, bad dialog, bad clothes...

Brosnan is fairly good, though again, he's had some bad scripts to work with.

9. Yes, the description of Bond from the Fleming books...
is Roger Moore through and through.

I think people just like Sean Connery better.

5. I agree - Moore wasn't so great
Though if he had decent scripts to work with, he'd have done a lot better, I think. Live and Let Die he was pretty good in. But so many of his movies were just stupid.

For my money, I really like Brosnan. WOW! Phenomenal Bond, IMO. And then Connery.

Mcgregor is being considered? This is the guy who played Obi Wan, right?

Not sure if I like that idea.

I think, and I'm being silly but yet it would be cool, if Tarantino directs the next one, then Danny Devito should be Bond.

6. I like Roger Ebert's idea for Bond
Denzel Washington.

If he can pull off the accent, he'd be perfect.

10. Sort of like the time Danny Glover played Philip Marlowe in...
...the Showtime movie "Red Wind," based on Raymond Chandler's novella from "Trouble Is My Business." It may sound odd, but I was impressed, and I respected the risk that was taken. Sometimes the best actors are the ones that challenge your expectations.

Washington could nail the attitude, no doubt about it. If a director (Tarentino, as mentioned here, or anyone with a bold and off-centered vision) tackled it, they could probably get you to believe him in the role WITHOUT the accent. I'm not sure if having him use the accent would be an asset or liability...

14. He could easily do the accent
Check him out in Kenneth Branagh's production of 'Much Ado About Nothing'.

17. One of my favourite films
he didn't try to do the accent to much, but just enough to be believable. Very well done. I had forgotten that, actually.

Denzel as Bond! Time to start a movement. :D

12. I grew up on Roger Moore as Bond (my first Bond film was
The Man With The Golden Gun) and I love the humor and his delivery. Sean Connery's one of my favorite actors but I've somehow never managed to see one of his Bond films in its entirety, other than the fairly dire Never Say Never Again that's not an 'official' Bond film. I do know, from what I've seen, that I like Roger Moore's smoother and more urbane take on Bond more, but that's maybe just because Roger Moore is who I grew up seeing as Bond.

I hated Moonraker, though....well, I didn't hate it, but I thought it was the least of his outings. I can't recall, but I think that I particularly liked For Your Eyes Only -- maybe it was partly out of relief that Moonraker was atypically bad. I remember all the positive fuss over Live And Let Die, and the associated merchandising (lots of tarot cards, etc), but in 1973 I was just a touch young to see the film -- enjoyed it when I saw it later and it was obvious that the humorous aspects of Bond and his gadgets grew exponentially after the first couple of Roger Moore films. The parachuting off the ice cliff in The Spy Who Loved Me remains a classic moment!

I missed the last one or two of Roger Moore's films, I think, and have only seen one of Tim Dalton's and two of Pierce Brosnan's. I do really like Brosnan as Bond, though I couldn't stand the most recent film -- what an awful mess that pile of junk was, start to finish, with the notable exception of Halle Berry's Ursula Andress homage.

13. Roger Moore was Simon Templar playing James Bond.
But he wasn't the worst Bond.

16. Um, Brosnan is the worst - he's a ripoff of Moore. And even Moore had
"For Your Eyes Only" and "The Spy Who Loved Me" being straight-played Bond adventures. Brosnan's outings camp it up for all they're worth and rely on fancy stunts to sell the show rather than acting talent or plot.
