I love the beach boys
sorry...I do.

I think if you really listen to the music, it has some cool stuff in it. Neat doo-wapish stuff, cool sounding instrumental play...and experimental stuff.

I must, however, wonder what "doo-wap" music is!

6. Stop apologizing
Brian Wilson and Beach Boy music got me through some of the toughest times of my life. The music is amazing, you can just feel the joy and love from it.

Brian took all the pain he had and made something rich and beautiful; that's pretty inspirational. His music is complex and experimental but it Connects!

My top albums:

Pet Sounds
Beach Boys Today
Summer Days and Summer Nights
Wild Honey
Sunflower
Love You

8. Ever hear the BB's back up Annette Funicello on "The Monkey's Uncle"?
That was my introduction to the band.

9. That was the Beach Boys??? I never knew that.
The only thing approaching the BB's was "Jan & Dean". Surf City was outstanding, in fact, I believe J&D accused the BB's of copying their style.

10. Actually, Jan & Dean copied the Beach Boys.
"Surf City" was written and produced by Brian Wilson.

Inspired, like Brian and about a thousand producers since, by Phil Spector.

"Dead Man's Curve" is a great production; I particularly like the French horn part.

30. And Dean Torrance sings the lead vocal on th BB's "Barbara Ann"
The story is that Brian was too wasted to get a good falsetto going, so they had their buddy Dean do it.

11. The Beach Boys had some genius albums...and were so tragic
The lives of the Wilson brothers was nothing short of pure tragedy...

I may be weird but I like the Beach Boys albums from Pet Sounds on...Sunflower being one of my favorites.

Can't wait to see the release of Smile.

14. Sunflower is a great damned album.
It's also, in my opinion, their best-recorded album. The vocals are particularly well-recorded. The distortion on "All I Want To Do" is wonderful.

16. For some weird reason, I've always liked "A Day In The Life Of A Tree,"
which is probably the least musically sophisticated song on Surf's Up. It also has an awful lead vocal by Jack Rieley, the Beach Boys' manager at the time... apparently Brian said he "sounded like a tree." But for some reason, I like it.

18. The people who deride the Beach Boys are generally referring
to the lyrics, which are often rather silly. I don't think a person can fault the music itself. Just sit there at the piano or with a guitar and play those chord progressions Brian came up with - they're like nothing else in pop music at the time (or since, for that matter). The sophistication of the arrangements, and the fact that Brian essentially "dictated" them to the musicians, is truly impressive. And of course, the lyrics on Pet Sounds are wonderful. The emotions expressed on that album, both lyrically and musically, are universal. I think that's why the record holds up so well.

22. Perhaps, but you have to admit
Edited on Sat May-29-04 09:55 PM by elperromagico
that some of those lyrics are a little... err... dopey.

But the same argument applies to dozens of groups and performers, so I don't give it too much credence.

23. A rock 'n' roll song's lyrics are of little importance to me.
Yes, I love a good lyric, but if a record has other elements in its favor, I'm more than willing to overlook silly lyrics. Can you say "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow?":+

26. I always liked them too!
Growing up a pre-teen in SoCal they were always heard, on car radios, wherever...even before the Beatles!...I liked them as I started listening seriously to music, just as they released "Surf's Up", a really good album...I liked "Holland" too, it has "Sail On Sailor" on it plus it came with a 7" that told a neat little story with some quite nice sounds on it! Soon after that, however, I think they decided to go the oldies route...

29. I'm a closet Beach Boys fan too......
I'm one of the few young Beach Boys fans out there. Pet Sounds got me through high school. A good portion of their music is pretty silly, but the rest of the stuff is pure genious. It's not at all a strech to call Brian Wilson a 20th century Beethoven. If he could have kept his mental problems in check and had more forward-thinking bandmates, they would have been bigger than the Beatles.

Brian Wilson To Release Lost Classic SMiLE In Fall 2004
Reconstructed Album Performed Live For First Time In London
pitchforkmedia.com
February 24, 2004

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/04-02/24.shtml

Perhaps the most highly-regarded unreleased record in rock history, the Beach Boys' SMiLE, is reportedly getting its official release 37 years after its creation, in fall 2004. According to a recent report from BBC News Online: "A few months ago Wilson revisited the SMiLE tapes in Capitol Records' vaults and went on to finish the album with his original lyricist, Van Dyke Parks."

Recorded between April 1966 and May 1967, SMiLE (working title Dumb Angel) was to be Brian Wilson's "teenage symphony to God," an album that would at once best the Beatles and surpass Wilson's latest masterpiece, Pet Sounds. Working with avant-garde lyricist Parks and the session players featured on Pet Sounds, Wilson crafted the album away from the other Beach Boys, who were then touring. Upon their return from the tour, the group met the album with mixed feelings, arguing that SMiLE's obscure lyrics and insanely dense compositions strayed too far from the norm to be considered for release.

As demonstrated on Pet Sounds, Wilson had developed a mastery of the studio as instrument, working with unconventional arrangements that combined modern rock instrumentation with orchestral touches as well as nonmusical objects including water jugs, Coke bottles, hammers, saws, and bicycle bells. Like the 1966 single/masterpiece "Good Vibrations," (which Wilson considers the band's defining achievement) each song written for SMiLE was recorded in pieces, in various studios, during different sessions, and edited later into completed mixes. Recording in this fashion was a long and painstaking process.

Wilson continued to experiment with the studio through the recording of SMiLE, but also suffered bouts with severe drug addiction and mental instability that further delayed the album's completion. In perhaps the most-cited example of Wilson's paranoia, he reportedly became convinced that his music was responsible for a series of fires in the vicinity of the recording studio. Another oft-repeated legend says the reclusive genius cancelled several expensive recording sessions due to 'bad vibes,' distancing himself from his musicians, bandmates, record label, and Parks alike.

32. Beach Boys forever and Pet sounds time and again places in the top 10
albums of all time. In fact there was an interview with Wilson a couple years ago where he was asked about Pet sounds being voted #1 and Wilson was a bit suprised because it had beat out the album he thought would have been #1.

Anyone doesn't like the Beach Boys may feel free to nibble on a surf board skeg.
