Yellowstone Super Volcano????

Has anyone heard of this? Should we worry about this or is it BS?

But very unlikely to erupt in your lifetime.

Rest assured though, that if an eruption is going to happen, the USGS will know about it years in advance.

My Dear old Dad (Hawker Typhoon) is a Ranger/Naturalist working in Yellowstone right now. If there were a eruption eminent, I think he'd mention it to me.

First sign of eminent eruption: 10,000 geology majors flooding the park, looking for dissertion material.
Last warning of eminent eruption: 10,000 geology majors fleeing the park, looking to survive.

The entire park is located inside an ancient caldera which erupted a millenia or two ago, essentially forming Yellowstone as we know it today

Edited part: Then again, the eruption itself is not necessarily imminent

It's real, but for one thing, it could happen anytime from 10 to 200,000 years in the future (although it is VERY unlikely that it will happen in our lifetime). Second thing is that from seismic observation, we'll be able to know probably many years in advance if it's about to erupt.

9. No, it won't surprise us.

It's too big of a volcano to just erupt all of a sudden. It will take years of rapidly rising pressure and seismic activity before it erupts.

11. That's what I think, too.

And I know it's what the experts think. And I know that is 99.999999% correct. So, I don't lose any sleep over it - but I don't believe that we can rule it out to a certainty.

Have you ever seen some of the documentation on the earlier eruptions? Phew! Makes Krakatoa look like a firecracker! Yellowstone is one nasty piece of geology...every once in a while.

I just saw a thing on Yellowstone on CNN Headline News. It said that a earthquake in Alaska had changed the eruption times for a few geysers.

13. Interesting... It might have travelled underground via a fault.

Much like a synapse travelling thru the nerve of a brain, the quake in Alaska may have shot down to Yellowstone and triggered abnormalities in the geysers.

Isn't there enough other stuff to worry about?

It either will or won't erupt, and there's not a damn thing we can do about it. Same with the New Madrid fault cracking again. Or an asteroid hitting us. Or a tsunami.

Save the worry time for things that we CAN do something about.

I'm a fisheries scientist and we work together determining groundwater contaminant runoff to fish spawning beds. Plate tectonics rule!
