I just came close to instigating a white-trash riot!
Edited on Sun May-30-04 04:47 PM by NightTrain
This weekend, they're having a big party in the front yard of my apartment building. The bash includes burgers on the grill and a karaoke machine with nothing but country songs on it. Now, I find today's so-called "country" music painful enough when sung by the musicians who created it; but to hear those same awful songs made even worse by synthesized instrumentation and half-drunk Jane Sixpack types is beyond tolerable!

As I got back from the grocery store and walked past the goings-on just now, the building manager and his daughter invited me to join the party. Given my feelings toward country music, I politely refused.

"Aw, come on," they implored me. "It's fun!"

I explained that since I was moving at the end of June, I needed to get to work on clearing the junk out pf my apartment. But they persisted. "It's the holiday weekend! What do you want to work for?"

I sighed. "OK, look. The simple fact is, I hate country music and all it stands for. Now, will you please excuse me?"

I thought my revelation would instigate a riot! In fact, maybe it did. I wouldn't know, however, since I'm back in the apartment and plan to stay here doing just what I told those people: namely, start getting ready for my move.

2. I'm curious,
just what does country music "stand for"?

Granted, some of it is sickly sweet sentimentality, but some of it is as lyrical or as fun as any other genre.

4. Look at it this way
Whenever there's a Republican in the White House who decides to bomb the fuck out of another country, who's always there to write untcuously sentimental songs about it? Nashville!

6. Whenever I hear "Have You Forgotten..."
...I want to put my fist through the radio.

That song is just one reason why almost 50% of Americans STILL believe that there's a link between Iraq and 9-11.

5. Can't we enjoy Dixie Chicks with a clear conscience?
I wonder how many closeted liberals and Democrats there really are in the country music business... afraid to come out for fear of what it would do to their popularity in the heartland.

8. There was a guy on Al Franken's show
I only caught a snippet of it. He's the manager for Brooks & Dunn (or however it's spelled; I hate country 'cept for Johnny Cash & Willie). He's starting or has started some country-music/pro-Democrat group -- I don't have details. He said Brooks & Dumb are with the dark side but he's working on them.

10. FWIW, I don't paint all country music with the same brush.
I was only trying to get those people to leave me alone so I could get back to the apartment and start excavating for my move!

11. I dunno...they were just trying to be nice
I don't care if someone is Repub or Dem, Green or Lib...if they extend their friendliness to me I accept.
