Web-cheat student to sue university
A student who was booted off his degree course for plagiarism is to sue the university. He says tutors at the University of Kent should have spotted what he was doing and stopped him sooner.

Michael Gunn, a 21-year-old English student, freely admits using material downloaded from the Internet to complete his assignments. He told the Times: "I hold my hands up. I did plagiarise. I never dreamt it was a problem."

His problem, then, is not that he was caught, but that he was caught too late. He argues that the university should have warned him of the consequences earlier.

"I can see there is evidence I have gone against the rules," he concedes. "But they have taken all my money for three years and pulled me up the day before I finished. If they had pulled me up with my first essay at the beginning and warned me of the problems and consequences, it would be fair enough."

2. It's idiots like this...
...that have caused the issue of "tort reform" to become potent. Unfortunately, quite a few people who have honestly been defrauded will lose out because of jackasses like this.

3. Sadly, many students see nothing wrong with plagiarism.
I've had several hits on our plagiarism checking website "turnitin.com". Each time I've talked to the kids they express amazement that they got caught and that I think it's wrong. The excuses are "I've done it before and no one ever said anything" and "everyone else does it."

Our rules are clearly written, but the kids don't get it. Are they just too lazy? I don't know the answer to that.

5. give me a break
:grr:

I had to defend my work last year because a Jerk took it from the course page and claimed it his own.
It was no big deal to defend it, but it meant me facing the plagiator in front of the Prof (with possible - even likely - consequences for one of us - possibly both). Idiots like that should stay clear of universities, or at least RTFM (Read the F*ing Manual).
