1. University open in Texas
That's something I always found weird about my job. I work at a public university in Texas and we meet the first day of classes for our Summer I term today and all university offices are open.

You'd think that in a state with as many active-duty and reserve folks and military bases as Texas that we'd be closed down on Memorial Day.

3. Not Functioning On All Brain Cylinders Yet!
I should have said the "Memorial Day weekend" or the last Monday in May. I'm not fully functioning yet! :hangover:

For the record, I agree with Senator Inouye:

"Mr. President, in our effort to accommodate many Americans by making the last Monday in May, Memorial Day, we have lost sight of the significance of this day to our nation. Instead of using Memorial Day as a time to honor and reflect on the sacrifices made by Americans in combat, many Americans use the day as a celebration of the beginning of summer. My bill would restore Memorial Day to May 30 and authorize our flag to fly at half mast on that day. In addition, this legislation would authorize the President to issue a proclamation designating Memorial Day and Veterans Day as days for prayer and ceremonies honoring American veterans. This legislation would help restore the recognition our veterans deserve for the sacrifices they have made on behalf of our nation." (1999 Congressional Record, page S621)

4. My fault actually. Poor attempt at a joke.
But hey, it's a Holiday, and I'm not running on all cylinders either.

Are you in still in Austin?

5. Denton, Actually
I've never been to Austin as anything more than a visitor...I'm located in Denton, north of the D/FW metroplex. Increasingly as the suburbs grow, we're more like the northernmost tier of the metroplex instead of being "north of" the metroplex.

6. NTSU is a great school.
The best jazz music program in the world. The One O'clock Jazz band is epic.

7. Great town for jazz
Although this county is about as rabidly Republican as you can get and it's already too effin' hot here for me, you can go to any number of bars in Denton during the week and expect to hear some good jazz.

My favorite haunt is the Greenhouse, where every Monday and Thursday they have live music and cheap beer. During the Fall and Spring the M-Th night musicians are usually from the Small Group Performance sections in the Jazz Studies programs and it's always interesting to hear them.

I think once this more recent larger bar/restaurant gets going that they are going to revive the practice of having each of the Lab Bands to come and play (one per week or so) on a continual basis throughout the semester during the Fall and Spring.
