Poll question: How overweight are you? Let's see DUers..
Ok, here's a poll that you can answer honestly without giving yourself away. The question is -- how would you rate your weight??

1. Now there's a taboo subject.
I put on weight when my wife got pregnant, so I could stand to lose 20 pounds. I carry it fairly well, but I want it gone.

2. Bad habits are the reason I'm overweight. I work all day, sitting down
most of the time, I eat junk food and them come home and eat dinner around 8 or 9 at night.

The most embarrassing part is I know what my problem is, I just don't have the incentive to change it.

5. Not overweight, just out of shape . . . I need weight redistribution :)
I have a gut and love handles and everything else is skinny, I just need to redistribute the weight (read get off my lazy ass and get some exercise).

9. Typical loss of lean muscle tissue ...
Edited on Mon May-31-04 03:37 PM by Trajan
7 % per decade .... that is in addition to gaining fat weight ... the loss of lean muscle mass is extremely problematic, in that it decreases daily caloric requirements ... and lowers basic metabolism...

Strength Training is the key to building lean body tissue ... nothing else, not even cardio training, will do this ...

Furthermore: developing lean muscle mass improves the 'tone' of those muscles ... making your profile sleeker and slimmer ...

Its a plus, plus, plus ..

7. Over weight by a lot..
Edited on Mon May-31-04 03:23 PM by KDLarsen
.. though I'm working on it - I have a New Years resolution to get down to two digits by the end of 2004 (that's kilograms, folks!), and so far it's looking positive. However, I need to get a dietist in on this, because while I try to east sensibly, I think that he/she could give some better advice.

And working out at the gym 4 times pr. week is also great fun.

11. I'd like to lose ten pounds but I'm around ideal medical weight
That's what my doctor says anyway. When I look in the mirror though I see fat on my stomach and a little on my thighs. My size 6 jeans are tight in the crotch area and size 8 is more appropriate. I suppose that I need the extra weight though in case I get sick, which has unfortunately happened to me before. Strangely, I have this body image problem now that I am thinner. When I was size 12, I knew that I needed to lose a little weight but didn't think about it as much as I do now. Even then, it was stupid to complain about it. It might not have been ideal, but it wasn't causing me medical problems and my heavier friends still saw me as thin.

12. I don't know
Edited on Mon May-31-04 03:46 PM by TrogL
I claim to need to lose about 15 pounds, but every time I raise the topic I get told I'm anorexic and that I need to gain about 10.

Six foot zero, 155 lb. I was complaining last week about suddenly gaining 5 pounds after a couple of days of riding my bike to work and I think I'm wobbling around 153. I'd like to go back down to 144 or 137 where I used to be stable. Problem with being 137 was buying clothes - I'd have to go to a "tall shop" to find anything that fit.

16. 15 lbs exactly overweight
Already lost 5 lbs.

Ladies please if you are in normal weight range don't give into the diet mentality. Just work out a bit or exercise if you can but gosh ladies with the curves in the normal weight range that is flat out sexy!

Almost every guy I know walks around 5-15 lbs over their ideal weight its pretty easy to hide since we wear loose shirts and carry it right on our gut.

A lot of ladies I know -- society would instantly brand as overweight or on the edge of maximum density at the very least -- you know what they all have in common?

Most of them are in their normal weight ranges and they are still trying to lose weight.

Seems sad to me.

17. I'm turning the corner on this...
I've gotten past the point where going to the gym is a major chore -- now I look forward to it. I've only lost maybe 4 lbs (I really don't weigh myself that often) but my waist has gotten noticeably smaller over the last month through running, weight lifting, and a rowing machine. I look better too, though I still have a ways to go.

I'm 6'4" and weigh around 270 lbs. I'm guessing I'll weigh around 250 to 260 or so when I'm as lean as I'd like to be (i.e. reasonably flat stomach, no 'love handles'.) Diet? I'm just trying to cut out excess sugary junk and eat somewhat smaller portions. Since it isn't like me to get on board with whatever the latest fad happens to be, I'm not sweating the fact that some of what I eat is "carbs". (If Atkins works for y'all, more power to ya.)

If I get to the point where I can run 4 - 5 miles with no problem and fit into pants with a 34" waist (rather than my current 38) I'll be insanely pleased with myself.

Those damn tables tell me I should weigh around 190. Sorry -- I'd be a walking skeleton.

19. My husband is about where you are
He has a big frame. He is your weight and would like to lose more weight. When he had mono though, he got down to 220, which I believe is still overweight according to those tables and he looked horribly anorexic. Build is a big part of ideal weight.

20. I lost 70 pounds last year
and I have been maintaining since December. While I dieted to lose, a big key, I believe, was finally establishing an exercise program of aerobics (elliptical trainer) and strength training (home gym.) I've gone from a size 18 to size 12 (sounds like one of those diet commercials, huh?) I fully intend to be part of the 5% of the folks who have lost weight who manage to keep it off!

Edited on Mon May-31-04 05:19 PM by peacec
I'm 5'11'' and roughly 180.

I look more like 150-60ish however. Most of my weight is in my thighs which are pretty muscular.

24. I have ridiculously low metabolism
especially in the winter. Picks up in the summer.

Not overly worrisome for me, I just do the winter/summer cycle like every good new englander should.
