1. I helped my wife buy new furniture for our new house,
then helped my step-daughter move into her new apartment. EVERYBODY'S MOVING!!!! ARRRRRRRGH!

Oh well, the Memorial Day sales saved us a lot of money.

Happy Memorial Day, DU. And a salute to all our veterans, living and dead.

And a big "Fuck You" to all the freepers who like it when our troops are in harm's way, as long as they themselves don't have to fight. :nuke:

It is called "Pfingsten" (Pentecost) here and is a Religious Holiday (It is a Federal Holiday, few people have to work) .
I woke up way too early because a <bleep> Protestant Mass was held right under my Bedroom Window :grr: .

After finally getting into gear (about a liter Espresso and a good breakfast) it was mostly work: writing a Paper, building some IKEA furniture, helping with a PC problem in the neighborhood.
Finally I got to enjoy a short walk and a little reading.
Followed by a workout and now DU.

Didn't make it to the Carnival of Cultures, and I'm quite angry about myself because of it...

7. Stayed home to try to get a lot of stuff done that I never get to
Unfortunately, although I did get a few things done, I frittered away much of the day by sleeping 'til noon and spending hours here on DU.

11. Finally mowed the lawn and did dishes
It started raining again, as it has been all weekend, while I was mowing but I had to get it done or the landlord will mow it for us and charge us. I did make spagghetti with store bought sauce with hamburger and extra herbs added to it. It's been pretty boring. It was bad weather and my husband is temporarily (we hope at least) lame.

14. I spent the day returning to St Louis from visiting my
family. I then spent the afternoon alone with my cat, who yelled at me for being gone all weekend while it stormed.

15. Other
1) I spent much of the day excavating the apartment for my upcoming move at the end of June. Ended up taking four shopping carts worth of stuff down to the Dumpster!

2) I finally got around to filling out the "Postcards For Our Troops" that a fellow DUer had sent me about a month ago. I'll be mailing the batch out tomorrow to Blue Star Moms for distribution to Iraq. I did that because I'm a left-winger who hates our troops and wants them all to die.

23. Went to the mall for specials
The SO Prophet and I went to look for Memorial Day specials at the mall. Alas, there were none. So we did come home and begin the procedure of grilling, and feasted on the bratwurst, and hamburgers, and potatoes, and salads, and fruit bats, and yaks, and badgers, and wombats, and breakfast cereals, and...
So let it be written, so let it be done.

24. Well, my niece and I were gonna go see "The Day After Tomorrow"
but tickets were sold out for all the shows, so we bought tickets for the 4:00 show tomorrow afternoon. Hubby wanted to go with us, but decided to stay home and catch 40 winks. :boring: We shared a delicious fried chicken dinner a little while ago. :9

Saturday was our "busy" day. We drove down to Fredericksburg, Virginia from our house in Woodbridge (about 1/2 hour away) for the Luminaria. Every year for the past eight years, the local Boy Scouts, in conjunction with the National Park Service, light a candle at the gravesites of every Union and Confederate soldier who died during the Siege of Fredericksburg. We went on walking tours at both the Federal and Confederate cemeteries, and paid our respects. (The Federal cemetary is at Marye's Heights; the Confederate is behind the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star building.) "Taps" was played on the half-hour, and the sight of the candles on the hillside once darkness set in was just absolutely breathtaking. At the Confederate site, there was a band playing songs that were popular with the Rebel troops (e.g., "Goober Peas").

Later that evening, we went to Carl's Ice Cream stand in Old Town Fredericksburg, where they serve absolutely THE best frozen custard ever (shameless plug for Carl's here, LOL).

A perfect ending to a wonderful day. :)
