Wedding Question. Would it be in bad taste....................
My oldest son is getting married this Saturday and the last band I was in is playing the reception. They want me to get up with them to sing and play a few tunes. Probably a Petty or Van Morrison song. The band learned Crazy Love at my sons request and the band wanted me to sing it but I turned them down about that because I figured I would be too busy mingling and stuff. I was definitely thinking about getting up with them for a song or two. My question is would it be appropriate?
I'm not sure if it would come over as fun or "over the top" so to speak.
Any suggestions?

2. To be sure
ask your son. But be sure he knows you won't be offended if he says no.

Weddings are a celebration and all should dance and sing!

3. I photograph weddings and I say....
that it is okay as long as it doesn't go on too long. If you're good, it will probably go over very well. If you're not, it will be embrassing in the extreme for the guests.

I did a wedding this weekend where one of the bridesmaids got up and sang "At Last," doing a very good impression of Etta James. It was well-received. However, a while back some guy got up to do "Unchained Melody." He had no voice and was tone deaf. It was excruciatingly bad.

6. It seems everyone that knows me....................
just takes it for granted that I will get up and I used to play with this band so I wouldn't embarass myself. His fiancees side , well that's another story. They are simple, quiet people.

4. If it were my wedding
(ha! insert snicker here, people!) and one of my parents or another relative was musically inclined, I'd think it was the neatest thing in the world, and it would make things even more special. I say go for it!!

7. Agreed
My cousin's husband is a music teacher and he sang his vows to her. I'm not one for mushiness, but that was a very touching moment.

I say if your son and his fiancee are OK with it, go for it.

5. If it's all right with your son
I was at a wedding last year where the bride's siblings each played for a song. Then the bride even played for a song at several of her friend's proddings.

8. You should definitely do it!
Especially if you're going to cover Van Morrison. :-)

I mixed sound for a rock band all through the 90's and it was common for friends or former band members to get up and jam at family events or parties.

Your son will be beaming with pride and

Congrats on the new daughter-in-law!

Still listening to your vocals in I Want You Back - I really love that song!

9. Doesn't sound traditional, but I say "go for it!"
And play it loud so outsiders can wonder wha the halliburton is going on.

Besides, I'm a homosexual. What do I know? O8)

13. I entertain for a lot of weddings and YES it would be totally appropriate
If there is any doubt, clear it with your son first to make sure it's cool with him and his bride...but that is the only consideration to have.

17. I think it's a great idea - we did it.
My husband actually played the drums during the Sonics' "Shot Down" with the Smugglers, who played at our reception. Everyone loved it and people were dancing on the tables and everything.

19. How laid back is the reception gonna be?
I know if I ever had a wedding it would be okay for my Dad to do that!!
But I am just a casual kinda person. It depends of the circumstances!

20. My side of the family is pretty wild and..............
loose. Most are musicians as is my son. He plays bass for me now. Both my son and future daughter in law expect me to get up there but her family are real quiet types.
The reception is a formal, 5 course meal kind of deal.
I'll probably play it by ear.

21. We had several "guest" players for our reception.
My husband and I both know a bunch of folks who perform. We live in a town where the music scene is pretty tightly interwoven. We had a horrible time choosing a band to play for our reception simply because we knew most of them and counted them as friends.

We finally hired a band with the deal that we paid them bar job rates, they played till the place closed, and anybody they wanted to let on stage was OK with us. Our reception ended up with an extended jam session, and it freaked out the reception hall when they saw the guests showing up with instruments and amps. :)

Several of our friends and family told us later they'd never had that much fun at a reception before or since.

The photos are amazing, and they are treasured memories to this day.

Have fun!

Laura

22. To quote Kali "ASK THE BRIDE" (my emphasis)
This is her day that she may have dreamed about since childhood. She'll probably be fine with it but please don't take a chance. Put the decision in her hands.
