Of these what should I take for a swollen/sore throat ?
I felt it coming on last night without any real pain and I woke up with it way worse with a bit of pain to swallow.

My choices are Tylenol(Acetominophen), Aspirin, and Nasal Decongestant(Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride)

I want to take the maximum reccomended dosage/combination but I want take the right thing.

I'm sipping hot tea and cold water.

5. Absolutely, gargle with warm salt water...
...at least 3 or 4 times today. Also, if you have any mint tea and honey, make a cup of hot mint tea and use honey instead of sugar. You can add a dash of lemon juice to it, if you want.

And slather Vicks Vapo-Rub all over your neck. Gooey and nasty, but it will help.

14. Absolutely. I swear by these things....
I have turned back many colds and flu-bouts with zinc lozenges. And even if the cold takes root, its course isn't as bad.

4. Throat Coat is good
It's a homopathic herbal tea you can get at many supermarkets.

It's cured me of oncoming colds a couple of times this year.

I also suggest a garlic capsule followed by a tablespoon of lemon juice sprinked with cayenne pepper. It's my miracle cure for what ails you.

7. aspirin or ibuprofin
would be better than acetominophen, because they are anti-inflammatory in addition to being analgesic (anti-pain).

I prefer ibuprofin over aspirin because it releives pain better, less likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects or bleeding problems.

8. Southern Comfort and Cherry Nyquil
alternate shots of each about every four hours. Works great me, except for that time I ended up comatose at the emergency room.

11. Also effective,
according to an alcoholic doctor I used to work for....
Take one quart orange juice mixed with one pint vodka. If no improvement, reverse the proportions.

Only kidding.

Gargling with salt water 3-4 times a day is the best.

10. Aspergum
It works topically on your throat. One of the best things I've ever used for a bad sore throat.

13. First gargle w/ salt water.
That helps temporarily. Is your throat scratchy, or does it just ache? Scratchy throats need to be coated, but that always felt kinda icky for me. It worked, but it felt like the whole area was numb. If it just hurts, then take a pain killer, which ever has worked best for you before. Hope you feel better. :hi:

that ususally heads stuff off before it becomes a cold and I don't have to overload on drugs.

17. Airborne Formula is also very good...
Get the kind like Fizzies, packed in a tube -- drop 'em in water and drink (the lemon-lime isn't bad at all) at the first sign of a sore throat, and repeat.

My wife got some of this for me when a friend of hers recommended it. I was skeptical, but it worked!

18. Do you still have your tonsils?
If so, it's possible you have little teensy bits of food caught in them causing the pain. Gargling hot salt water is gross, but it has a scouring effect, cleaning that crap out of your tonsils. It really does help a lot. It has the side effect of whitening your teeth, too. Just don't swallow it.

Over-the-counter throat anesthetics are good for numbing the pain, but they won't treat the cause. If swollen tonsils are the cause, you need to clean them out (or, in the worst-case scenario, they may need to come out). If it's postnasal drip causing the sore throat, then be very careful not to swallow any of it; keep tissues handy and spit that stuff out! It makes your throat very raw to swallow it. Figure out what's causing the sore throat.

If you have white spots or streaks in your throat, hie thee to a physician; you have an infection and you may be contagious.
