God daaaaaaaaamn did Iron Butterfly suck hot wind!
I was little more than a kindergarderner when first exposed to their In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida album, just able to read, and remember listening to it (my parents had it).

Something just brought them to mind, so I went to Kazaa and downloaded "Flowers and Beads" and "Most Anything You Want".

What in the holy hell were you 60's types thinking, buying this steaming pile of the most pretentious, over-the-top, responsible for all the acid rock caricatures and sterotypes, self-indulgent crapola that ever got signed.

"Flowers and beads are one thing, but havin' you girl that's.... (raaaaaaaaalph!!!!!).....splash!"

I feel musically violated, and simultanteously almost wet my pants it's so damn 'funny' bad.

Ugh.

more than one of their live albums...and we'll save a post about their tye died fans for another day...living proof that smoking bad dope is NOT good for you. :D

2. those songs were terrible
the first album, "Heavy," is their best.
Check out "You Can't Win" and "Iron Butterfly Theme."

4. Honestly
I've never heard any of their songs beside Inna Gadda Da Vida. Maybe that's a good thing.

6. "Hey Marge, remember when we used to make out to this hymn?"
15 1/2 minutes later.. Organist collapses.

That scene from the Simpsons validates I. Ron Butterfly's existence IMO.

9. do NOT BLASPHEME the dead, fools.
Ok, a third of the time their concerts were not so good.
a third of the time, they were just OK.
and a third of the time they lit the place up and were Gods.
you weren't there you insolent pups.
go back to your mullet- and big-hair '80s arena bands.

as for inna gooda da vida, all but about 3 percent knew they sucked incredibly. Even the name was a ripoff.
But: a friend of mine build monster speakers for his car stereo which. while technically shit produced enormous sound. incredible volume. fortunately, we put the speakers between the grill and radiator of his 1957 Chevy. One track from the eight-track version of 'Inna" took up the drum solo. We would drive through our enemies' towns playing the drum solo over and over until they begged for mercy. It was fabulous.

OK, in a little northwest Minnesota town we lacked many things to do.

10. I've had the incredible misfortune to have seen the Dead, with Jerry
At Laguna Seca, which is about three miles as the crow flied from where I grew up.

God damn, did they suck! As for mullet and big-hair arena bands, I think the Dead might actually have been marginally entertaining if they were in spandex and sported mullets.

They wouldn't have been so pitiful, and it would have been easier to laugh at them without feeling guilty.

12. F*** Iron Butterfly!

In fact, fuck all that '60s psychedelic bullshit. If I'm going to listen to music from the '60s, it's gonna be soul, baby. Ain't a psychedelic rocker dead or alive that could ever hold a candle to Aretha, Marvin, Otis, or the Temptations!

15. Hendrix could play the hell out of a guitar, that's for sure...

...but when it comes to '60s music, nothing touches me the way vintage soul rhythms do.

Just my own personal tastes, y'understand....

13. You like badness?
I have a DISCO version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida...It, along with my Disco album of Led Zeppelin favorites, are safely sealed in storage...However I'm moving in six weeks to a happier place, soon I might break them out so I can listen to my Disco album of Beer Barrel Polka favorites! Just in time for Oktoberfest, and then! I have two albums of disco Christmas carols! Ooh yeah!

16. I disagree
I own their CD "The Best of Iron Butterfly" and have managed to locate all of their LPs, with the exception of their mid-seventies "reunion" albums, "Heavy", "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida", "Ball", and "Metamorphosis" and consider them all to be better-than average albums. "Ball" is probably my favorite and "Metamorphosis" the least, but there is something good on all of them. "Unconscious Power", "In the Time of Our Lives", "Termination", "Soul Experience", "New Day", "Belda-Beast", "It Must be Love", and "Easy Rider" are some of my favorites. I would recommend "Heavy" to those who aren't a fan of the style of music they play on "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida"; it's a little less "trippy". I would actually recommend their "Best of" CD to anyone willing to approach it with an open mind. I personally think they recorded a lot of great psychedelic, early "metal" music, and consider them to be one of my favorite sixties bands.

And FWIW I'm no aging hippie; I'm twenty years old and have never abused any substance beyond caffeine. I DO have a fascination with many things retro, but don't consider myself to be blinded by it. I guess we can agree to disagree on the subject, but just wanted to defend Iron Butterfly here even if I have to do it by myself. :-)

17. I'm sorry
But I like some Iron Butterfly. I have a very clear memory of driving home when I was 16,(many years ago and yes I smoked pot at the time,) and hearing In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and I freaked out and had to stop on the side of the road and listen to it. Keep in mind, I was stoned, so I was was only going about 5 miles per hour so it was easy to stop.
