Poll question: WHo plays the best hollywood loser?
Edited on Fri Aug-22-03 09:26 PM by HEyHEY
I may not have them all, I can't remember so explain if you post one. My vote is Randy Quaid, all those cousin eddie roles do it for me!

1. Gary Oldman
He was awesome in The Professional as a small-time criminal/pimp, and in Basquiat as a sorta-discovered artist.

2. Ned Beatty
How many times has anyone seen him in a movie or TV show; doesn't know his name, but knows him as the guy who "squealed like a pig" in Deliverance? Talk about a bad career move.

26. It would have been even worse if poor Ned had become typecast
"We've got this role for a pudgy middle-aged man who goes to prison" or "We're casting this movie about a Turkish vacation that goes horribly wrong"

10. Yes!
In Fargo, Ghost World, Living in Oblivion--

whenever you see Steve Buscemi show up in a movie, you know that his character is not going to have a happy time of it.

11. some trivia
in every Coen brothers movie with Steve, barring two, he dies, and ends up in successively smaller pieces.

the last two I remember, there is the woodchipper for Fargo.
Then ashes for the Big Lebowski

(those are the only two I can remember)

13. I was shocked--shocked!--not to see him on the list
I'm not a big movie fan by any stretch, but I clicked on this thread fully expecting to throw down a vote for him.

4. He hasn't done many films ...
... but I'd like to mention Timothy Bottoms. He played the broken-down Sonny Crawford in "Texasville" amazingly well -- and what with him portraying George W. Bush so much recently, I'd say that would put him in contention for the "loser" roles.

15. Struther Martin in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance"
Lee Marvin (Liberty Valance)throws Jimmy Stewart's steak on the floor... John Wayne calls him out on it...tells him to pick the steak up. Both reach for their guns.

Struther Martin, Lee Marvin's sidekick, tries to difuse the crisis by picking up the steak.

"I'll get it Liberty," he mutters, groveling for the steak.

John Wayne boot-kicks him across the room.

The epitome of a loser!

17. Definitely William H. Macy
I don't think I've ever seen him play somebody who was not a loser. Even if things look ok for him at the beginning of a movie, I know that's they'll be going downhill.

The pedophile he played in "Happiness" is probably the 'best' character I've seen him play.

And the Harry Dean Stanton call is spot on. His role in Alien comes to mind. :-)
