Who's from your town?
The house next door to my local independent theater bears a plaque designating it as the Zasu Pitts house - she grew up in it. Rory Calhoun is also a local. The Rev. Mel White, former associate of Jerry Falwell and now his gay antagonist neighbor is from here - his Dad was mayor back in the 50's.

Go Zasu!! Whoohoo!

49. Loy Vaught is also from Kentwood
He was a freshman at EKHS when I was a senior. My little sister graduated with him and knew him pretty well. I think she knew Mike Knuble, but he was too much younger than me to have been in high school at the same time I was. They didn't even have the hockey rink when I graduated (1982).

I visited EKHS a couple of years ago and was amazed at how much the campus has expanded. There's the whole "Freshman Campus" building (when I was there, we had the "ying wing" for freshmen), there's that new junior high right there and of course, they are building the new freeway right there. The farms are all gone, there's a McDonalds and a strip mall on Kalamazoo right across the street. When I went there, there was nothing around except the one block of houses and farms.

5. Living in Springfield, Illinois we have Abe Lincoln.
The tour of his house is actually very cool. They have is sectioned off as a block and you can see who the people were lived on the block as well.

AG Edwards of financial fame lived by Lincoln and I guess he introduced Mary Todd to Abe.

It is fascinating to visit Lincolns home and Lincolns Tomb. If you rub his nose (at his tomb) it is suppose to give you good luck.

I know because that's where my family is from and everytime we go home my dad announces, "Zazu Pitts was born here!" as we enter town.
if it's not Zasu, it's "Buck Clayton was born here!"

8. Speaking of Zasu....
ZaSu Pitts' high school graduation picture. It is from the 1914 edition of the Trident, the Santa Cruz High yearbook. The comment in the yearbook reads:

"Rarely is a class so fortunate as to have such a brillant leading lady as ZaSu Pitts. Even the solemnest, most awe-like member of the class loses their dignity at her comic interpretations. Can you imagine what future Hi plays will be without her? Moverover, she possesses that unusual quality, common sense, and lots of it."

He wasn't born in Austin, but he's lived here for quite some time.

Sandra Bullock - same deal.

I think Mike Judge, Robert Rodriguez and Richard Linklater call Austin home, too, although they might have been born in other places. Lots of musicians call Austin home as well.

Basically, there are 5 native Austinites. The rest of us moved here from somewhere else.
