Any long-term I.T. unemployed out there who are all of a sudden
getting called by headhunters, HR people, etc. regarding interviewing but then there is no follow up?
I'm suspicious that the administration is encouraging some big employers to "stir the pot" and act as IF they were actually going to start hiring again - just to get people's hopes up that the phony recovery is actually going on.
Sort of play these games for the next few months just to agitate the masses into thinking they might get a job - then in the Fall - everything goes quiet just like in 2003.

1. MBNA - here in Delaware
big GOP contributor. They supposedly have a major project underway to compete with AMEX.

2. Interesting.... though it doesn't seem like an effective ploy...
I'm employed, but I have received a couple of calls from headhunters in the last month... hmmm

I can't believe that the headhunting firms would play along with such a strategy, since it exhausts their resources and they receive no commission.

9. Well, the 'hunters are feeding off the nibbles (rumored jobs) tossed
to them by the HR people - they are being duped, also.

5. Things have always been tough for generalists
I've always considered myself one, and have always customized my resume for almost every job application.

My current most promising opportunity draws on very specific experience I got from my most recent job. I must decline to give any more detailed information at the moment, but the company I just interviewed with has systems architecture almost uncannily similar to the last place I worked.

4. I've had a few promising nibbles without followup BUT...

...just yesterday I aced a second interview and got asked to come to a third one. So my nice vacation may be coming to an end.

I've been out since February 9. IMO the only difference I've seen compared to past job outages (my previous one being 10 years ago): Companies and headhunters seem to have dispensed with the courtesy of a rejection letter. I have a collection of them from past periods of unemployment, and remember thinking how rude some companies were to send a mere postcard for that purpose. Now you don't even get a damn email.

I think I'll write Miss Manners about this issue.

Very discourteous since one never really gets closure.

Good Luck!

6. My brother-in-law.
In fact, he has given up and started long-distance truck driving. And loves it! Amazing how people re-invent themselves when necessary...and at the age of 64.

7. hmm
Well, my fiancee was a computer programmer for 10 years, then was fired in Aug. 2001.

She hadn't gotten so much as a call in about 2 years, when she got one for a job she was perfectly qualified for a couple months ago.

It didn't come to anything, but

The good news is, she has an internship as a graphic artist, and in early July we should find out if she will be hired on by the company.

I've got a friend, just moved here from LA, has been trying for a few months to get a job. Lots of headhunter calls, but no job yet.
