Significance of Mars Proximity?

It only happens once every 60,000 years that Mars gets this close, so I went out and salaamed the Red Planet. I'm not sure there's any significance to any of this, any thoughts?

When you grow up in New York you don't usually tune into astronomy. The air is so full of pollution we're lucky we can see Orion on a clear night in winter. Then I remember driving through Arizona at night, stopping the truck and getting out. Amazing! No wonder people take this stuff seriously. It makes all the difference when you can actually see it.

I'm glad it's on the front page of CNN's website today.

I saw it from the Abaco Islands in the eastern Bahamas this past weekend. (like the eastern edge, next stop Africa if you go farther east) The only lights there are the stars and a few boats.

It's truly beautiful and awe inspiring, especially when viewed through a telescope. (you could see a bit of the southern polar ice cap)

I am glad that with those landers and stuff, this stuff is getting more exposure. Looking forward to Jan 2004.
