New heights of tackiness...
I received a catalog yesterday, one of many I get. This edition points out that the holiday season is approaching...well, for those wishing to make a buck from it. In the Christmas section, there are two ornaments that caught my eye as being excessively tacky.

One is a tree ornament, alternating red and white stripes on the bottom, and a top half consisting of a blue background, covered with white stars. The other is an American snowman, complete with red and white striped hat with blue trim and stars, wearing a blue coat and carrying two American flags.

Just in case those aren't quite enough, they have Christmas cards, outside of card showing cute little critters in a field of snow, looking at the Northern lights, which have somehow chaged to red and white stripes. Inside, it shows the same ones...a deer, a racoon, a squirrel, and a fox, gazing at an American flag in a snowy field. One of the snow covered trees has a Cardinal perched on top, like an ornament.

So there, folks, you can have it all in one gigantic cliche! Christmas, cute creatures who are obviously really, really patriotic, the flag, the whole thing. And whoever makes the things can make money, while shamelessly exploiting Christmas AND patriotism. I shudder to think what horrors await us as some people plot their lawn ornaments this season.

3. Okay, this just HAS to be a joke
"Mouth blown, hand painted presidential boot Christmas ornament from Poland. 4” tall, features the Great Seal of the United States in incredible detail. Unique and fun ornament!"

I won't even go there

4. OOh, that annoys me
I can deal with the ornaments, unless some SuperPatriotChristian(tm) fills a tree with more than, say, two of them. Stuff on Christmas trees are just ornaments, and show off what we like, etc., and can be a fine mix of secular, sacred, and purely artistic.

But I CANNOT abide the patriotic Christmas cards. That is SOOOOOO totally Christian Nationalism, and I am angered by those types of cards when I receive them from people. That's a deep depth of tackiness, and shows an utter misunderstanding of what it means to be a citizen and what it means to be a Christian. Same if the tree gets more than one or two patriot ornaments, or those red white and blue lights for Christmas 2001 I saw all over? ANGRY CITY! Couldn't stand it. Can't stand it. Especially trees decorated on church grounds that had all red white and blue lights.

AGHHHHH!

9. I wish you wouldn't show me such things
and I wish I had the self control to not look... :-)

Obviously these people have no conception of how to separate their religious lives from their nationality.

How offensive are those? A LOT!!

Either you deify God, or America. But you can't do both.

6. Buying this shit is just another way of...
being a fat lazy idiot.

If you buy and display this stuff, you will be a patriot! No muss. No fuss. No effort. Just display this trinket or gee-gaw to your friends and acquaintances, and you will be showered with adulation!
"My you really do love America, don't you?".

This way -

You don't have to do any of the work of a real patriot.
You don't have to defend speech that is completely opposed to everything you believe in.

You can bitch and moan about paying taxes, but yet take advantage of every interstate highway while driving in your 4 mpg SUV, while being protected by the Armed Services, the police, fire and rescue services, and other government services.

And don't forget, you only need to complain about discrimination when someone like YOU is discriminated against - "Don't worry about all of those foreigners and minorities- they weren't born here anyway." And you can fall in love with GWB - because he loves 'Murica, too.

You don't have to acknowledge the fact that although he abdicated his duty in the National Guard, he has no problem ordering other young men to their death so that he can add to his wealth, along with the rest of his Mayberry Mafia.

By buying this "patriotic" shit, you can be just like "your friend in the White House." All hat, and no cattle. Empty soul behind a glazed, spray painted facade.

In reality, it's just fucking pathetic.
