There will never be another group like Led Zeppelin
Ever.

:hippie: :smoke:

Some poor bastards may think that's a good thing, because they don't like Led Zeppelin very much. I think it's a good thing because they made a sound so truly Holy that it should defy imitation. You can give a billion monkeys a billion musical instruments and stick them in recording studios, and they'll never in a billion billion years come close to that sound (though they could well replicate today's new music hits in a matter of minutes, and it would take a lot less monkeys; the similarities would be eerie I tell you).

They will forever sit high upon the Mountain of the Gods of Rock and Roll, to Shangri-La beneath the summer moon in a way only they could. Led Zeppelin, that is, not the monkeys. :D

You just gave me a great idea for tonight: Led Zeppelin and some :smoke:

Wish the hockey season was here, my night would be perfect.

2. First game is Sept 16th, I think
But that's one of those exhibition games and might not be televised. Pre-season opens up on the 18th, only three weeks!! :D

6. The White Stripes Come Close
Jack White sounds a little like Robert Plant and plays guitar as well as Jimmy Page.

Meg White is no John Bohnam, but who is?

There about as close as any band I've ever heard.

And I like them better than Led Zep anyway.

7. I like the White Stripes ...
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 12:23 PM by dawg
but Jack in no way shape or form, even in his wildest dreams, plays guitar as well as Jimmy Page.

Edited to add: (not that I don't enjoy Jack's playing, I think he's great just not as good as Page)

10. agree completely
love the White Stripes, but Jack's playing isn't even on the same planet as Page's. Not as innovative, riffs not as interesting, etc...

22. White Stripes remind me more of the Beatles
I keep expecting him to sing "Goo Goo G-choob" when I hear their music. No resemblance to Zeppelin to me.

8. I like most Zepplin, but Plant screams to much...
...seriously- a really pretty song like "Going to California" starts with a great mellow vibe- and then "Percy the Golden God" starts his high-pitched screaming. Plant is my LEAST favorite link.

Favorite Zep tunes:

Nobody's Fault But Mine- Cock-Rock at it's finest.
Dancing Days- bohemian lyrics- good stuff...
Houses of the Holy- again, would be better without the screaming at the end.

16. Ten Years Gone.
The memories it brings back of sunny days and reefer is the closest thing this federal employee's going to have to getting massively stoned until his retirement party.

Why the hell can't anyone write songs with major 7th chords any more?

12. I love Zep, but...

As I got older, and discovered their blues sources, I realized that early in their careers, they were just a highly stylized blues cover band. Plant's yowling made the songs sound like bizarre blues parodies. But even as early as the third album, they let their folk influences in, and got more experimental. I love the reggae and funk touches added to the "Houses Of The Holy" album, my favorite by them. Throw in the underrated "III" and "Presence", the classic "IV", and you have quite a memorable rock canon. Of course, I love the first disc of "Physical Graffitti", and "In Through The Out Door" too. Plant's voice came down by that album, mostly. Page continued to surprise and delight with solos like on "Fool In The Rain". Throughout the decade, Bonham was thunder personified, and Jones never gets enough credit as anchor.

But... I can see why Willie Dixon sued them for "Whole Lotta Love" - which was setted out of court, and I think their cover of Robert Johnson's "Travelling Riverside Blues" is perhaps one of the worst covers of him ever done. "The Lemon Song" does even worse - it steals half his lyrics and metaphors, while pretending to be "original". "In My Time Of Dying" borders on bizarre parody - but they almost make it work. Don't be fooled by the credits, it is an old old song no one knows who wrote - Dylan did it on his debut 13 years earlier.

So yeah, I love Zeppelin, but time and my blues addiction has changed my ears somewhat. Also, I quit listening to the radio for good because the classic rock station in Seattle played them disproportionately far too much. NO band, not even my favorites, should be overexposed so much. It devalues the music.

13. Ummmm....huh?
I think it's a good thing because they made a sound so truly Holy that it should defy imitation.

Holy? Hey, I like some of their music, but holy?

Every band, no matter how good, had crap that discounts that notion.

Candy Store Rock sorta throws the holy bit right out the window.

15. Only suckass guitar players opine that he is a suckass guitar player
The evidence stands for itself.

Was he Frank Zappa, Ralph Towner, John McLaughlin, Andres Segovia?

Of course not.

Was he inventive, unique, did he have his own, unique phrasing and did he influence millions of players and the music industry in general?

You tell me, Ace.

21. People say Patrick Roy is a lousy goaltender
And all the other good goaltenders out there are using the techniques he developed. The stats speak for themselves. I guess people just get jealous.

Fortunately for me, no station out here really plays them very much. Overplaying any band, no matter how good, kills them.
